Final Fantasy Resonance Is Exactly What Should Happen When Live-Service RPGs Die

Final Fantasy Resonance is set to launch on October 22, and as exciting as a new Final Fantasy release is on its own, what’s most compelling is that the game may be the key to saving live-service RPGs and other live-service games that have been shut down over the years. See, Final Fantasy Resonance isn’t completely new. It’s a reworked version of the now defunct mobile spin-off Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and brings it to consoles as a single-player experience.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius was a free-to-play mobile gacha game that ran for eight years until Square Enix officially shut it down in 2024. Mobile gacha games aren’t every Final Fantasy fans‘ cup of tea, but the spin-off had a solid dedicated fan base. It’s always unfortunate when fans have to say goodbye to a game they love because a company decides to bring everything to an end. Games shutting down means that years’ worth of playtime is made redundant, but Final Fantasy Resonance is proving that there is another way.

Final Fantasy Resonance Is Demonstrating That Live-Service Titles Don’t Have to Go Away Forever After Being Shut Down

It’s important to make it clear that Final Fantasy Resonance is only retelling the first chapter of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. So, longtime Brave Exvius fans who were hoping to experience the entire game’s story all over again might be disappointed. However, there is still potential for the other chapters to be released in separate installments. This is purely speculation on my part, because Square Enix hasn’t made any announcements that hint at such a plan, but it’s not impossible. Square Enix has also revealed that Final Fantasy Resonance is getting some reworks with an HD-2D art style and more traditional turn-based combat, so the game won’t be an exact one-to-one remake of Brave Exvius.

One of the biggest draws of Brave Exvius, and now Final Fantasy Resonance, is that it allows players to summon “Visions” throughout the game. Visions are memories of some of the best Final Fantasy characters. This feature is the game’s very own way of playing around with multiverse concepts, so characters like Clive, Cloud, and even Tidus can be summoned to help a player in battle. Visions offer the perfect excuse to bring back some of the franchise’s most beloved characters in brand-new ways.

Final Fantasy Resonance Says Goodbye to Microtransactions

There are a lot of games with too many microtransactions out there, and mobile live-service RPGs are far from the only genre that utilizes these kinds of aggressive, moneymaking models. Brave Exvius‘ microtransactions and gacha mechanics were some of its biggest drawbacks, but Resonance is the perfect fix to features that a lot of players criticized. The real money that is being spent is another big reason why live-service games shutting down burns players. Those who have spent money on these titles no longer have anything to show for it, so Final Fantasy Resonance hopefully kickstarts a wave to save defunct live-service games, so players can return to the worlds that they literally invested in.

With Final Fantasy Resonance, players can enjoy the gameplay aspects that they loved in Brave Exvius without having to worry about the frustrating mechanics that are so common with live-service titles. Micrortransactions in gaming have caused a lot of fatigue among gamers, so Final Fantasy Resonance‘s approach is a welcome remix.

As Live-Service Games Come and Go, Final Fantasy Resonance Is a Promising Second Chance

Brave Exvius‘ world doesn’t have to disappear forever now. Final Fantasy Resonance is bringing it back in a way that saves it from ever being locked away again. It might be a new take on the original iteration, but the system reworks could actually make for a better gameplay experience. Final Fantasy Resonance‘s gameplay is embracing what made classic Final Fantasy so fun to play, so it’s going to be interesting to see how it resonates with younger gamers who have more experience with the series’ modern action-forward era.

Final Fantasy Resonance Needs to Be the Blueprint for Other Live-Service Titles Moving Forward

This past decade has been largely defined by a constant stream of live-service games. Whether it’s Fortnite, a game like Helldivers 2, and even hits as big as GTA Online that have been thriving for well over those 10 years, the live-service model has been huge for the industry. Developers and publishers constantly chasing live-service success now feel like it’s becoming a thing of the past, though. Dev teams put a lot of time and effort into bringing these live-service worlds to life, and they deserve to live on, even when the popularity begins to fade.

Square Enix saw the value in repurposing a live-service Final Fantasy game into something that preserved not just the game world, but also the fascinating world that devs put so much love into. Only time will tell if any other shut-down live-service games will follow in Final Fantasy Resonance‘s footsteps, but it’s a good start. Even though Brave Exvius wasn’t considered by every fan to be one of the best Final Fantasy games in the franchise, it doesn’t mean that it deserves to be gone for good.

There are a lot of exciting Square Enix games slated for the future, and Final Fantasy Resonance and its remixed art style and combat hopefully resonate with a lot of fans who have been craving some classic Final Fantasy. Now that Resonance is freeing Brave Exvius from its mobile exclusivity, there are plenty of Final Fantasy lovers who are probably going to be experiencing this game for the very first time, which makes its launch that much more exciting.
