When Fable releases for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in February 2027, it will do so with five different difficulty levels and a ton of customization options for that difficulty. Indeed, while it’s only a glance at Fable‘s difficulty, such options hopefully mean that it is more accessible for many gamers, whether they need to tweak things to be easier, adjust things to accommodate disabilities, or crank the difficulty to the max.
Fable was originally supposed to release in 2026 before it was delayed into February 2027, with the reason being obvious: Grand Theft Auto 6. February 2027 has basically become the September 2026 of next year, though, as some games are trying to get out before GTA 6 or a few months after. Avoiding GTA 6 means Fable will compete directly against games like God of War Laufey, Metro 2039, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, and Persona 4 Revival. In a recent interview with PCGamer, though, director Ralph Fulton explained that it’s not afraid of the competition (speaking to the team’s confidence) and that the only game it doesn’t want to directly compete with is GTA 6…which no one does, so.
Fable’s Difficulty Levels and Customization Options
As spotted by fans on Reddit, Multiplayer.IT shared a glimpse at the difficulty options. There are clearly 5 difficulty levels based on the bubbles below the option display, with text on the right-hand side explaining that “Hero” difficulty is default and thus suggesting it would be considered “normal.” The third difficulty level appears to be Legend, which would likely be the equivalent of Hard. It looks like it can be cranked up twice more from there, based on this screenshot, but the difficulty customization is where it gets next level.

While players can use the basic preset difficulties, they’ll also have a long list of customization options to tweak the Fable gameplay themselves. Perhaps they want high enemy damage to test them, but low enemy durability to avoid sponge-like enemies. That’s just one possible example, with the complete list of changes (as seen in the screenshot) including the following:
- Enemy Damage
- Enemy Durability
- Enemy Aggression
- Reaction Windows
- Health Orb Potency
- Cooldown Speed
- Accessible Parry
- Explosion Protection
- Block Auto-Resume
- Unblockable Attack Armour
NOTE: These are not exhaustive, as indicated in the screenshot, and there appears to be plenty more options.
It’s worth noting that Fable 3 did not have customizable difficulty or even basic sliders, as it was a fixed difficulty that was pretty simple overall. In other words, this is a conscious decision to move away from blanket difficulty and let players live up to their own power fantasy preferences in the new Fable game, which is nice to see from developer Playground Games.

Overall, with the latest Fable gameplay, confirmation of Fable‘s story length, and other key details being revealed (like its PC specs), it feels like the game is real and close. Perhaps it would have made its release date if not for GTA 6 because it feels confident and ready for February…and it’s only August, almost September (as of this writing).
