My kids started school today. Summer is officially dead. Long live the fall video game release pile-up. That season is officially underway with both Capcom’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword and Rebel Wolves’ grim action-RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker. But there are two niche indie games that caught my eye this week as well, and I’m not talking about the gorgeous anime co-op game Orbitals for Switch 2.
First there’s Isle of Reveries, a very The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening-style top-down action-adventure. The metroidvania features eight different overworld biomes and seven different dungeons, each containing unique puzzles and items. It might not measure up to the quality of Yacht Club’s Mina The Hollower, but it looks very neat.
Then there’s Aegis Force: The Scorian War, a conventional-sounding tactical RPG with a very unconventional 2.5D HD-2D art style. It’s inspired by things like Shining Force II and Fire Emblem, and has you navigate a fantasy world where tech and magic are at war with one another. Again, I have no sense if it can measure up, but as a sicko for the genre and aesthetic, I’m definitely intrigued.
