Halloween: The Game No Longer Releasing On PS5 In Japan Due To Violence And Nudity

Halloween: The Game will no longer release in Japan on PS5 after failing to get a domestic rating due to some of the extreme content in the horror game. The news comes right on the heels of the game not releasing at all in Australia due to its depiction of drug use.

Developer IllFonic released a statement on August 30 that the game has been unable to secure an age rating with the Japanese age ratings body CERO, blocking its planned release on PS5 in the region. The team has cited their desire not to alter the game’s content in order to attain a rating from the agency, though the game will still release on Xbox and PC platforms in Japan as scheduled.

“Unfortunately, our rating for PlayStation has been cancelled in Japan due to our inability to obtain a domestic rating from CERO (Computer Entertainment Rating Organization) for the title’s visceral violence and nudity,” the team behind the game explained. “We have determined that regulating the content to achieve compliance would significantly compromise the worldview of the original film, and would also prevent us from providing the gameplay experience that players expect.”

As for how the game can release as planned on PC and Xbox despite failing to secure an age rating from the local age rating body in Japan, this is due to the legal requirements surrounding CERO ratings and how they are enforced. CERO ratings are required for any video game receiving a physical release, but remain optional for digital-only titles, with the internationally-recognized IARC ratings also available in these circumstances. Although all platforms, including PlayStation, recognize the IARC ratings body in Japan, Sony still require CERO ratings in cases where a game would be classified 18+ by IARC, which prevents Halloween: The Game’s release on the console.

Japan employs strict rules regarding full-frontal nudity and gore across all mediums via CERO, even beyond gaming, often leading to other titles like Resident Evil: Requiem to tone down the violence present compared to international releases. With the team choosing not to make changes to the Japanese release, the game will now release only on Xbox and PC as originally planned on September 9th.
