Final Fantasy 2’s Firion Officially Returns on October 22

Firion, the lead character of Final Fantasy 2, will join the roster of Visions in Final Fantasy Resonance once the game arrives on October 22. Firion’s upcoming arrival in Final Fantasy Resonance is not the first time that the FF2 protagonist has appeared in a Final Fantasy spin-off title.

Originally released in Japan for the Famicom in December 1988, Final Fantasy 2 was a departure from the first Final Fantasy title. Since Final Fantasy had a definitive ending, Final Fantasy 2‘s developers had to come up with a new story that was independent of its predecessor. Drawing inspiration from the original Star Wars movie trilogy, FF2 tells the tale of Firion and his comrades, as he joins the Wild Rose Rebellion to fight the tyrannical Palamecian Empire. Western audiences could not officially experience Final Fantasy 2 for over a decade, until the 2003 launch of the Final Fantasy Origins compilation on the PS1.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Director Teases More Spin-Off Characters

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation game director Naoki Hamaguchi states additional characters from the FF7 Compilation may appear in the upcoming game.

Final Fantasy 2’s Firion is a Vision in Final Fantasy Resonance

Soon, Firion will join other Final Fantasy heroes like Cloud Strife in the roster of Visions that players can recruit. Final Fantasy Resonance is an HD-2D remake of the first story arc of the mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, which has since been discontinued. Final Fantasy Resonance was first unveiled during the June 9 Nintendo Direct broadcast, with Square Enix later confirming that the game will be available on all current-gen platforms starting Thursday, October 22. One of Final Fantasy Resonance‘s main features is the Visions system, which allows the game’s main cast to call upon incarnations of past Final Fantasy characters to assist them in battle. Some of these heroes are listed below:

  • Warrior of Light
  • Firion
  • Onion Knight
  • Cecil Harvey
  • Bartz Klauser
  • Terra Branford
  • Cloud Strife
  • Squall Leonhart
  • Zidane Tribal
  • Tidus
  • Shantotto
  • Vaan0
  • Lightning
  • Y’shtola Rhul
  • Noctis Lucis Caelum
  • Clive Rosfield

As of this writing, 26 Visions have been confirmed to appear in Final Fantasy Resonance, including 16 heroes from mainline, numbered Final Fantasy games. Each Vision will perform a unique attack when summoned. For example, Final Fantasy 9 protagonist Zidane Tribal will use his blades to cut down enemies and can enter Trance mode to finish off a fight quickly. By comparison, popular Final Fantasy 14 character Y’shtola will draw upon the aether to rain down powerful magical attacks on the battlefield.

In the Dissidia Final Fantasy spin-off series, Firion was depicted as an arms master who carried an entire arsenal of Blood Weapons with him, ranging from swords and bows to magic staves. This depiction of the Firion will carry over into Final Fantasy Resonance, as Firion wields his various weapons to execute multi-hit attacks when called upon. Firion’s ultimate attack has him firing multiple arrows from his bow that can cover a wide area. Much like Final Fantasy 7‘s Cloud Strife, Firion will assume the role of a Breaker in Final Fantasy Resonance. Firion will also have elemental affinities for thunder, wind, and holy magic, making him effective against foes weak to any of those elements.

PlayStation Confirms New State of Play for This Week

Given that Final Fantasy Resonance’s main story draws from the first arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the upcoming game is an example of Square Enix taking content from discontinued live-service games and retelling it in a new way. With Final Fantasy 14: Evercold and Final Fantasy 7 Revelation also coming down the pipeline, Final Fantasy fans will have no shortage of games to play throughout 2026 and 2027.
