Capcom has just confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword has already sold over one million copies. This continues a very impressive streak for Capcom, with Onimusha: Way of the Sword being just one of several high-profile releases from the company this year alone.
Making its debut in 2001, the Onimusha franchise released a total of four mainline games and several spinoffs between 2001 and 2006. While remasters of the first two Onimusha games were released in 2018 and 2025 respectively, the series’ last full-fledged entry was the PlayStation 2’s Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. That is, until now. Last week saw the launch of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the first new entry in the samurai action-adventure series in 20 years. By most accounts, the wait seems to have at least been worth it, with Onimusha: Way of the Sword earning a Top Critic Average of 86 on OpenCritic, and a recommendation score of 95%.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Sold Over 1 Million Copies on Launch Day
Along with a positive critical reception, Onimusha: Way of the Sword also seems to be an early commercial success. On September 7, Capcom officially announced that Onimusha: Way of the Sword had sold over one million copies worldwide on launch day. Capcom also confirmed that with this extra one million, the Onimusha franchise as a whole has now surpassed 10 million copies sold.

In the official press release confirming the sales data, Capcom attributes Onimusha: Way of the Sword‘s early commercial success to “several marketing initiatives prior to launch,” specifically citing the game’s public demo releases and hands-on exhibitions. These initiatives are believed to have expanded “awareness among a broad range of users,” leading to a larger player-base at launch. Additionally, Capcom’s press release concludes with the confirmation that Capcom is “focusing on re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently,” which seems like a logical direction given Onimusha‘s early success.
Capcom Is Having a Very Successful Year
But Onimusha: Way of the Sword is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of Capcom’s success this year. Ahead of its annual shareholder meeting back in June, Capcom updated its Consumer Sales Volume information, confirming some major sales milestones across its wide range of IPs. Resident Evil remains Capcom’s heaviest hitter, with this year’s Resident Evil Requiem confirmed to have sold 6.9 million units since its February 27 launch. Two months after Requiem‘s launch, Pragmata hit store shelves. A brand-new sci-fi IP from Capcom, Pragmata sold one million units in just two days, and hit 2.5 million copies sold by the end of July.
While its three major 2026 releases have all been commercial successes right out of the gate, Capcom has continued to see the growth of previously released games as well. Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4 all sold over 2 million copies each during Capcom’s last financial year, as did Devil May Cry 5.
