New Persona Remakes Teased by P4R Producer

Persona fans just got some good news about the potential for more remakes in the future, as Persona 4 Revival producer Kazuhisa Wada says they are likely happening. The Persona series has already seen Persona 3 Reload as a remake of P3, and the upcoming Persona 4 Revival is set to remake P4. Now, it seems like the original Persona 1 and 2 are next on the list for Atlus, with the games planned to be remade eventually.

As the Persona series celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, there have already been plenty of exciting announcements and releases for fans to enjoy. Persona 4 Revival is slated for a February 17, 2027 release, and Atlus officially announced Persona 6 at the Xbox Games Showcase back in June. Even more Persona content appears to be on the way, with the developer already teasing plans for future remakes of older games in the series.

Atlus and Sega release a brand new trailer for Persona 4 Revival that shows off 5 brand-new features for the remake.

Persona 4 Revival Producer Says Persona 1 and 2 Remakes Happening “Eventually”

In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Persona 4 Revival producer Kazuhisa Wada essentially confirms that Atlus has plans to remake the original Persona along with Persona 2 eventually. According to Wada, remakes and remasters are important for the cultural preservation of games, which was part of the philosophy behind Persona 3 Reload and Persona 4 Revival. This same thought naturally means that P1 and P2 are likely to be remade in the future as well. As Wada says:

“For me, I think a remaster or remake is some kind of cultural preservation. As a creator, it’s your duty to take the things you’ve done and make sure they’re not lost, and are still around in the modern day. From that same perspective, Persona 1 and 2 are something we’ll probably eventually do too.”

While Wada doesn’t give a specific timeline for when fans can expect to see these new remakes, their soft confirmation through this interview is exciting nonetheless. Persona 1 and Persona 2 remakes are high on the wish lists for many fans of the series, especially since Persona 3 and 4 have gotten remakes. These older Persona games are much harder to access and have far more outdated gameplay mechanics and visuals that make them ripe for a remake or remaster treatment.

The original Persona is only available on the PS1, with a port also released on the PSP. Although the game was included on the PlayStation Classic mini console, those are also hard to find nowadays. Persona 2 is a duology that includes Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment, both of which are only available on PSP outside of Japan. The inaccessibility of these games makes remakes seem like a necessity, especially with how much the Persona series has blown up in the past decade.

Additionally, the gameplay of the first two Persona games is a far cry from what fans of the modern entries are used to. Many Persona fans consider Persona 3 to be where the series really begins due to its implementation of the calendar and Social Links mechanics that would become central to the series’ identity in later entries. In terms of cultural preservation, it’s unclear if these future Persona 1 and 2 remakes will stick to their original, rudimentary gameplay features or work to integrate more modern aspects of the franchise into their gameplay. Regardless, fans should be happy to hear that Atlus is committed to preserving the franchise’s history with future remakes of these original games.
