GTA 6 Officially Details Open-World Features

Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be a much more interactive open-world game than its predecessor, with Rockstar Games seemingly determined to make Vice City feel like a place that is constantly doing something. The game has already shown off a much more detailed world, from its expanded cast of characters to its crowded streets and more reactive environments. New details now reveal that Rockstar has gone much further with the small systems that players can interact with while simply moving around GTA 6‘s world.

GTA 6 has hundreds of enterable interiors, with three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. Vice City alone is said to be twice the size of Los Santos, and that gives GTA 6 a lot of room for the smaller features Rockstar has apparently packed into its world.

GTA 6 PS5 Controllers Have Already Sold Out

The official GTA 6 limited-edition PS5 controllers are already selling out at some retailers as preorder stock continues to fluctuate rapidly.

As reported by Vice, those open-world features include some surprisingly detailed safehouses. In GTA 6, players can eat food, throw away trash, and even shave at bathroom mirrors, while hair can be cut shorter at a safehouse (growing it back out requires a trip to a barber). GTA 6 also has a zoo and functional drive-thrus, and Rockstar apparently experimented with making players buy groceries before deciding that was taking things a little too far. Snacks and drinks can still be purchased, though. Getting around this huge GTA 6 map should also be easier, with buses, trains, trams, taxis, and RydeMe (essentially the game’s version of Uber) available as transportation options.

GTA 6 also appears to be making much greater use of its characters’ phones. Confirmed apps include BuckMe, RydeMe, Scooter Bros, WhatUp, Waink, Snapmatic, and a fitness app, while Scooter Bros can actually deliver a player’s personal vehicle (something GTA 5‘s single-player campaign could not do). Social media is also fully integrated into GTA 6, with NPCs able to post about events happening around the world. Players can then travel to those locations and actually witness the events in real time, making GTA 6‘s social media feel like another way of discovering things rather than just another menu.

Even GTA 6‘s smaller environmental details are getting attention. Traffic density changes depending on the location and time of day, with the same road reportedly becoming much busier later in the day as people head home. Sand can stick to characters’ shoes, characters visibly sweat after sprinting, plants move through water, and reflections appear in windows, mirrors, and puddles. GTA 6 also brings back Greet and Antagonize interactions, which can be used with any NPC, while a photo mode is included.

GTA 6‘s changes extend into the actual controls and movement as well. The elevator sequence shown in the Extended Look was reportedly live gameplay rather than a pre-rendered cutscene, while cover remains mapped to R1 on PlayStation. Crouching is now separate from the traditional cover system and lets players strafe during combat, and shoulder switching from Red Dead Redemption 2. Sprinting has also been changed (it is no longer mapped to tapping X and instead uses the L2 left-joystick prompt). None of these individual additions completely redefine GTA 6, but together they suggest Rockstar is building a world where even the smallest interactions have received considerably more attention than they did in GTA 5.
