Modern Warfare 4’s Villain Officially Revealed, and It’s a Great Pick

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 just received a brand-new trailer during the Tokyo Game Show. This new trailer focuses solely on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4‘s campaign, and introduces fans to the series’ newest antagonist.

Announced back in May, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4‘s campaign will revolve around a war breaking out between North and South Korea. Stuck in the middle of that conflict is Captain John Price, who’s gone rogue following the assassination of General Shepherd at the end of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. It’s unclear what Price’s goal is in MW4, but he won’t go unopposed, with both a mysterious new antagonist and a former brother-in-arms setting out to stop him.

New Co-Op PS5 Game Is Like ARC Raiders Meets Call of Duty in Death Stranding

PS5 users who are also fans of ARC Raiders, CoD, and Death Stranding might want to check out this new game, which has the DNA of all three and more.

Mads Mikkelsen is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s Main Antagonist

Towards the end of the most recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 trailer, an intimidating voice can be heard, threatening long-time series protagonist Captain Price. This mysterious voice tells Price he’ll make him “cry for mercy,” as “everything and everyone [he] cares for dies in ways [he] can’t imagine.” The camera then reveals the source of this threat; beloved Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen. There’s no official word yet on who exactly Mikkelsen is playing, but it seems likely he’ll be the primary antagonist of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 given the dialogue in this trailer.

This isn’t the first time Mads Mikkelsen has appeared in a video game. Back in 2008, Mikkelsen lent his voice to the 007: Quantum of Solace tie-in game, with the actor reprising his role as Casino Royale‘s main villain Le Chiffre. 17 years later, Mikkelsen’s Le Chiffre made another video game appearance, this time in Hitman: World of Assassination. Between those two James Bond-themed experiences, Mads Mikkelsen appeared in Death Stranding, where he provided both the voice and motion capture for antagonist Cliff Unger.

The bulk of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Tokyo Game Show trailer focuses on the core divide between Captain Price and the team he once led. Following the events of Modern Warfare 3, Price has teamed up with the Las Almas Cartel, and the remnants of Task Force 141 have been given orders to hunt him down. This trailer also teases a bit more of Private Park Hyun Jun’s story, with the young South Korean recruit being the game’s second playable character.

Long-time fans of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series might be a little confused about the appearance of a new antagonist in Mads Mikkelsen’s yet-unknown character, given how the previous game ended. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 brought back original Modern Warfare trilogy villain Vladimir Makarov, and spent its short runtime focused on his rise to power. The final mission in Modern Warfare 3‘s campaign ends with Makarov killing a member of Task Force 141 and escaping into the wind. There’s been no mention of Makarov yet in any of Modern Warfare 4‘s trailers, and it’s unclear if Mikkelsen’s character will be connected to him at all.
