Konami Officially Breaks Silence on Silent Hill: Townfall Reviews

The Silent Hill series has been on an unusual run over the past several years, but many fans could argue it’s back on track, with the upcoming release of Silent Hill: Townfall carrying a lot of that weight right now. After the series spent much of the 2010s without a major new entry, the franchise returned with multiple projects that have helped reestablish it as a major name in horror. Silent Hill 2 Remake kicked off that resurgence by revisiting one of the series’ most celebrated games, while Silent Hill f followed with an entirely new story and setting.

Each game also took noticeably different approaches to bringing Silent Hill back. Silent Hill 2 Remake focused on modernizing a familiar psychological horror experience, while Silent Hill f moved the series to 1960s Japan and introduced a new cast, setting, and collection of disturbing themes. Both approaches ultimately gave fans another reason to pay attention to what Konami has planned for the franchise, and the next part of that “revival” plan is Silent Hill: Townfall.

Silent Hill: Townfall is a Full-Length, First-Person Entry in the Franchise With Jaw-Dropping Graphics

The first gameplay trailer for Silent Hill: Townfall is finally here, and it brings a full-length first-person experience with impressive graphics.

Konami Has High Expectations for Silent Hill: Townfall Reviews

Silent Hill: Townfall is now another major part of that revival, and in a statement to Famitsu, Konami producer Motoi Okamoto has already expressed an unusually high level of confidence in how it will be received. While confidence is always good, developers generally don’t talk about future critical reception in such direct terms before a game is released, as it could create some backlash if reviews aren’t as good as expected. Sometimes embargoes are revealed, but that’s usually as far as a company goes on commenting on its reviews before they exist to mitigate any potential miscommunication risk. Whether that’s good or bad for Silent Hill: Townfall remains to be seen, but as Okamoto said,

“I have confidence that Townfall will achieve similarly high acclaim [to Silent Hill 2 Remake and Silent Hill f], enough confidence to feel that it might end up being the masterpiece [of the revival games], so I have extremely high expectations.”

For context, Silent Hill 2 Remake reviews set a high critical benchmark for the modern revival of the series. It currently holds an 86 Generally Favorable Metascore on Metacritic after 105 critic reviews, as well as a 9.0 Universal Acclaim User Score after 5,200+ user reviews. Critics generally praised Bloober Team’s modernization of the original game’s psychological horror, atmosphere, presentation, performances, and combat while maintaining the story and identity of the 2001 classic.

Similarly, Silent Hill f reviews reached the same 86 Metascore on Metacritic, based on 98 critic reviews, although its user reviews go in a completely different direction (6.6 Mixed or Average After 2000+ reviews). Its 1960s Japanese setting, unsettling atmosphere, story, themes, and puzzles were among the elements frequently highlighted in reviews, while some criticism focused on its combat and repetitive aspects. Ultimately, the reception gave the series another broadly acclaimed release without simply repeating what Silent Hill 2 Remake had done.

Silent Hill: Townfall consequently has a particularly high bar to clear if its developer’s expectations are any indication, but hopefully that confidence doesn’t amount to some kind of blowback. Whether Silent Hill: Townfall ultimately reaches the level of acclaim seen by Silent Hill 2 Remake and Silent Hill f remains to be seen, but openly suggesting it could become the masterpiece of the revival is a considerably stronger statement than developers typically make about their own unreleased games.
