Final Fantasy VII Revelation Is Gonna Eat Up 200 Gigabytes Of Storage

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is shaping up to be a beast of a game. Not only will its open-world setup finally lay the remake trilogy’s entire planet at your feet, but it’ll also consume a Meteor-sized chunk of space on your hard drive. In an interview with VGC, director Naoki Hamaguchi said, “Things are still getting worked out, but it’s probably going to be around 200GB of game.”

Two-hundred of god’s own gigabytes, in this very specific, very expensive storage economy? Sheesh. I guess the fact that the game is so large is why an additional download is required for folks who buy a physical edition of the game—for as long as that’s allowed, given…y’know. Hamaguchi seemed to understand that the file size wouldn’t be well-received. “I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent,” he said.

Later on in the interview, Hamaguchi shared at least one thing contributing to the large file size. That piano minigame everyone enjoyed so much has gotten a big buff.

“This time around, that’s been greatly expanded,” Hamaguchi said.

There was a piano minigame in the original Final Fantasy VII outside Tifa’s room in disc two. If you were savvy enough to peck out the Final Fantasy VII Main Theme, you earned Tifa’s ultimate limit break, Final Heaven. That mechanic was expanded for Rebirth, offering a more true-to-life musical instrument experience akin to Ellie’s guitar playing in The Last of Us, but the rewards players got for tickling the ivories weren’t much more than some materia you could buy elsewhere in the game. According to Hamaguchi, the rewards in Revelation have been upgraded along with the minigame.

“It now contains information related to Tifa. You can learn more about Tifa by playing this piano game.” While more info on Final Fantasy VII’s best girl is always welcome, the remake trilogy has already stretched the game so far beyond its original confines that it already feels too big. It’ll be interesting to see what other content, story and otherwise, Square Enix stuffs into this game to make it worth the enormous storage resources it requires.
