An oddly crisp video of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire gameplay, posted by an official Pokémon account, has eagle-eyed fans convinced that Nintendo Switch ports of the third-generation Pokémon games may be landing much sooner than anticipated.
Earlier this morning, the Pokémon Times account on X, self-described as the “Official” Pokémon Information Account, posted this suspiciously high-definition video of the fan-favorite Wingull, Peeko, chasing Mr. Briney around in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
A glimpse at the comments on the post immediately shows that several users are suspicious of exactly how high-quality said footage is. “The color is way too vibrant. It’s the Ruby Sapphire Switch version, no doubt about it,” reads one comment (machine translated from Japanese using X’s built-in translation).

But why has this footage led fans to believe that this is a port of the game running on a Nintendo Switch, rather than someone capturing footage from an unofficial emulator? Well, as one user on r/GamingLeaksAndRumours pointed out, official Pokémon accounts, such as Pokémon Times, never post emulated footage.
Instead, they usually post footage that looks like this–and by “this,” I mean super low quality. Nintendo has a tendency to take issue with unofficial emulators, and The Pokémon Company likely follows Nintendo’s guidelines on only posting footage from games captured on official Nintendo hardware.
Of course, there’s a much simpler explanation for this speculation: in February, dataminer LuigiBlood spotted that the official emulator used for the Nintendo Switch ports of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen also supported ROMs for Pokémon Sapphire, Ruby, and Emerald.
And given that the Nintendo Switch ports of FireRed and LeafGreen reportedly sold extremely well despite complaints about them being too expensive, ports of Pokémon Sapphire, Ruby, and Emerald are essentially a foregone conclusion. At this point, it’s very much a matter of when, not if.
