After a long wait, open-world vehicle simulator BeamNG.drive is finally heading to PlayStation 5 on October 19. Meanwhile, Forza Horizon 6 still has no release date, leaving PlayStation 5 players waiting for another major open-world driving experience. And that could give BeamNG.drive the perfect opportunity to fill the gap.
BeamNG.drive is widely regarded as a 9.7/10 driving simulation game because it holds 97% positive reviews from more than 400,000 user ratings on Steam. Developed by BeamNG, the game has been in early access since 2015, meaning it has been in active development for more than a decade. The PS5 release will not mark its long-awaited 1.0 launch, but it will instead come with the biggest update BeamNG.drive has received to date.
BeamNG.drive Coming to PS5 with Split-Screen Mode
Revealed via a short trailer, BeamNG.drive has confirmed it will release on the PS5 and PS5 Pro on October 19, with a big surprise: split-screen mode for local multiplayer. Fans can already wishlist the ultra-realistic driving sim on the PS Store, though the exact pricing hasn’t been confirmed at the time of writing. If the PS5 version of BeamNG.drive follows the same pattern as the Steam version, it will likely cost about $25 USD.

What Makes BeamNG.drive a Special Driving Sim
BeamNG.drive features a state-of-the-art engine that, according to the developer, calculates physics-related events at a rate of 2,000 times per second, resulting in incredibly realistic car crashes and a level of driving responsiveness rarely seen in other racing simulators. Beyond its realistic physics, BeamNG.drive also functions as a sandbox, giving players the freedom to decide how they want to play across its massive open-world maps. With a wide range of modes and user-generated content, the game offers plenty to keep players engaged for tens of hours.

As a realistic simulation game, BeamNG.drive also has extensive car customization features, allowing players to fine-tune nearly every aspect of their vehicles before testing them in real-life-inspired scenarios. Also, the game’s roster extends well beyond traditional race cars, giving players the chance to drive a variety of unusual vehicles, including giant haul trucks, large wheel loaders, school buses, and even armored trucks.
Given its overwhelmingly positive reviews on Steam and the developer’s years of work improving the game, BeamNG.drive could be well-positioned for success on PS5. And unless the Forza Horizon 6 PS5 port suddenly shadowdrops in October, BeamNG.drive could also be the sole appealing option for fans of driving and racing sims in October. However, some players remain concerned about the game’s performance on the base PS5, as BeamNG.drive is considered a highly demanding game, and it remains to be seen how successfully the developers have optimized it for consoles.
BeamNG has teased that PC users can expect the 0.40 update to arrive around the same time BeamNG.drive launches on PlayStation 5.
