Dark Arisen Just Made Its Lack of New Vocations Make a Lot More Sense

Dark Arisen Just Made Its Lack of New Vocations Make a Lot More Sense

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen brings the base game to greater heights with a brand-new icy region called Norgan, quality of life improvements, and new endgame content, making it the biggest upgrade that Capcom’s fantasy RPG has ever seen. Fans have been begging for new content for a while now, and Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Risen feels like more than just a run-of-the-mill expansion in many ways. Game-changing upgrades like Cyberpunk 2077‘s Phantom Liberty have raised the bar when it comes to post-launch content, and it definitely feels like Dragon’s Dogma 2 is using Dark Arisen as an opportunity to give the game a second chance, which originally made the lack of new vocations a real head-scratcher.

For an expansion as robust as Dark Arisen, one would think that this would be the perfect opportunity to add new Dragon’s Dogma 2 vocations into the mix. Classes are a staple RPG feature, so adding two or three extra ones to the game sounds like the obvious choice for an expansion of this scale. However, in a surprising twist, the Capcom dev team that is in charge of Dragon’s Dogma 2 never even considered expanding the vocation roster, and for a good reason.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Doesn’t Add New Vocations Because the Dev Team Wanted to Enhance the Existing Ones

Dragon's Dogma 2 Dark Arisen expansion

Dark Arisen is definitely expanding the game by adding Norgan to the Dragon’s Dogma 2 map, but the upcoming content is less about making the game bigger and is actually more focused on improving the experience by adding more gameplay depth to existing mechanics. One of the main ways that Dark Arisen adds extra layers is through the new Lost Rites dungeons. Dark Arisen could have easily just focused on Norgan, but the Lost Rites dungeons are scattered across the map to bring extra challenges and rewards to players.

Nintendo Everything recently got to chat with director Kento Kinoshita and producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi about what led them and the rest of the team to make certain decisions when creating the Dark Arisen expansion. One of the most interesting parts of the interview was when the two were asked about why there weren’t any new vocations added to Dragon’s Dogma 2.

We never really considered adding new vocations. Our approach was more that taking the existing vocations in the game and expanding the strategic possibilities would be more beneficial to all players.

The fact that adding new vocations was never really even discussed is fascinating, because a lot of developers would immediately go in that direction when it comes to developing an expansion. Instead, the team wanted to make existing vocations more satisfying and complex in order to give an extra edge to player strategy. Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s four starter vocations and six unlockable options already offer plenty of choices for players, and adding more depth to each one actually sounds like a brilliant way to make classes feel fresh without bogging fans down with extra options. New vocations sound great in theory, but they could also quickly become overkill.

A Refresher on Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Vocations

  • Fighter – Starter
  • Archer – Starter
  • Thief – Starter
  • Mage – Starter
  • Warrior – Unlockable
  • Sorcerer – Unlockable
  • Trickster – Unlockable
  • Magick Archer – Unlockable
  • Mystic Spearhand – Unlockable
  • Warfarer – Unlockable

Ten vocations are plenty, and it’s refreshing that the team working on Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen was aware of that instead of going the “bigger means better” route. The original Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen has already built a reputation as one of the best games for build variety, so it’s promising that Kento Kinoshita and Yoshiaki Hirabayashi are teasing a similar approach with Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Dark Arisen Demonstrates That Focusing on Depth With Existing Mechanics Is Sometimes More Effective Than Newness

New vocations don’t always entice active or lapsed players to jump back into a game again. In an alternate reality where Capcom decided to add extra vocations to Dragon’s Dogma 2, there is a good possibility that a lot of players simply wouldn’t have been interested in trying them out. Since the game has been around for two years at this point, many existing players have their go-to vocations that they focus on. Fans have continued to voice ways to improve Dragon’s Dogma 2, and one that has been brought up across social media over the years is fleshing out the vocations more. Dark Arisen’s upcoming vocation tweaks are a direct response to those critiques, and it hopefully brings the extra punch that can make character builds more satisfying.

The layout for Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s weapons has been adjusted from four to six slots, new skills have been added, and even existing skills now have higher levels to bring added depth. That’s enough to give players a sense of newness without having to learn about a new set of vocations. Everything else coming to Dragon’s Dogma 2 in Dark Arisen is intended to breathe more life into the experience, so it only makes sense for the vocations to get the same kind of treatment.

Important Details to Know Before Dark Arisen Launches

  • New Norgan region with a brand-new story arc
  • Dark Arisen’s main campaign is expected to last between 15-20 hours.
  • 12 Lost Rites dungeons
  • Updated character creator with added hairstyles, tattoos, and deeper facial customization
  • Added fast travel
  • Switch 2 release
  • $29.99 (expansion only)
  • $49.99 (base game and expansion bundle)

The wait for Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is finally almost over, and it’s going to be fascinating to see if this expansion truly gives the fantasy RPG a second chance at becoming the game that many were expecting. Dragon’s Dogma 2 wasn’t a bad game when it first launched, but it experienced plenty of critiques regarding in-game content and issues similar to Monster Hunter Wilds‘ performance problems.

Once Dark Arisen gets here, it could mark the start of a new era for Dragon’s Dogma 2. The base game had a lot of great concepts going for it; there was just more time needed in the oven. Of course, only time will, but a comeback story for Dragon’s Dogma 2 would be a fun way to keep the ball rolling on Capcom’s strong 2026 win streak.
