A new Pokemon release includes some fan-favorite features, like Shadow Pokemon, Mega Evolutions, and more. Pokemon is arguably the biggest media franchise in the world, and so it’s no surprise that it has its fair share of fan-made projects. Over the years, Pokemon fans have stepped up to make all kinds of original games based on the franchise, with some recent ones drumming up quite a bit of attention.
For example, Pokemon Ghost Grey is a recent fan-made game that is set in an eerie, rundown version of the Kanto region 50 years after the events of Pokemon Gold and Silver. It features a bunch of never-before-seen Ghost-type Pokemon in the form of regional variants for existing creatures. And then there’s Pokemon Victory, set in an Ancient Greece-inspired region with 140 new Pokemon for players to catch. Now yet another fan-made Pokemon game is turning heads.
Pokemon: Wishes of Tomorrow is Out Now
Pokemon: Wishes of Tomorrow is a new fan-made game about an antagonistic faction attempting to steal Jirachi’s wish for themselves. The game features Shadow Pokemon, which first appeared in the cult classic Pokemon Colosseum on the GameCube. Shadow Pokemon are corrupted Pokemon that players can steal from other trainers and purify. It’s an interesting idea that has popped back up on occasion over the years, including in the hugely popular Pokemon GO.
Shadow Pokemon aren’t the only gimmick in Pokemon: Wishes of Tomorrow. The fan game also brings back Mega Evolutions, with players have the option of mega-evolving their Shadow Pokemon. Mega Evolutions were first introduced in Pokemon X and Y on the Nintendo 3DS, and were expanded upon in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. While Pokemon: Wishes of Tomorrow is a fan-made game, Mega Evolutions have actually made a big comeback in an official capacity as well.
Last year’s Pokemon Legends: Z-A features Mega Evolutions as a core mechanic, which makes sense as it’s set in Lumiose City, itself part of the Kalos region featured in Pokemon X and Y. Not only that, but the competitive-focused Pokemon Champions also has a big focus on Mega Evolutions. Mega Evolution has long been one of the most popular Pokemon battle gimmicks, and so it makes sense to bring it back in the official games, and it’s not surprising that fans have also made it a point to include it in their own projects, as is seen in Wishes of Tomorrow.
As far as upcoming official Pokemon releases go, the big ones are the Generation 10 Pokemon games, Winds and Waves, which are expected to release at some point in the holiday season of 2027. Pokemon Winds and Waves will mark the franchise’s main series debut on the Nintendo Switch 2 and are hotly-anticipated, but much about the games remain a mystery at the time of this writing. Nintendo and The Pokemon Company are expected to reveal a lot more about Pokemon Winds and Waves on Pokemon Day, aka February 27, so fans should mark their calendars accordingly.
