PS Plus Is Losing One of Its Best Horror Games at the Worst Possible Time

PS Plus Is Losing One of Its Best Horror Games at the Worst Possible Time

PS Plus is a great way to try out new games at no extra cost to subscribers. That being said, the company makes changes to the PS Plus lineup of free titles each month, taking away some fan favorites, which can naturally leave some gamers feeling upset. This spooky season, Sony is taking away an iconic horror title that is a must-play for those who haven’t already tackled it. The game, hailing from Konami, is set to leave just as we approach Halloween.

While the subscription service does feature a substantial list of horror titles—some old, some new—games like this one are what make the subscription so attractive in the first place. PS Plus was created to get players out of their comfort zones, allowing anyone and everyone to try out iconic games without spending a cent. Now that it is leaving the lineup for the foreseeable future, it’s time to reminisce on what makes it so special, along with discussing alternatives for titles to play this Halloween.

Silent Hill 2 Remake Update is Causing Serious Headaches

The Silent Hill 2 remake recently received an update meant to fix a visual problem on PS5 Pro, but has unintentionally introduced a new issue.

Silent Hill’s Spookiest Game in the Franchise Is Leaving PlayStation Plus This Halloween

Sony added the Silent Hill 2 remake to PS Plus during spooky season in October 2025. Now, the company is removing it during spooky season in October 2026, just eleven days before Halloween. This is a travesty, to say the least, given the game is an iconic horror romp, and one I think everyone should be playing—especially during Halloween, when everything should be about getting scared. Seven confirmed games are set to leave PS Plus’ superb lineup, leaving subscribers without titles like Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Rogue Lords, Jurassic World Evolution 2, and Gloomhaven: Mercenaries Edition, among others.

Silent Hill 2 remake leaving serves as the biggest blow to the subscription’s free catalog, in my opinion, because it is simply necessary gameplay for all gamers, especially horror fans. The remade title was released back in 2024 and aimed at offering improvements to the beloved 2001 survival horror title created by Masashi Tsuboyama and Takayoshi Sato. Improvements were made to graphics, gameplay, and controls were modernized for a new generation of gamers.

Silent Hill 2 Remake Is the Kind of Horror That Sticks With You

What makes Silent Hill 2 remake so worthy of a playthrough, especially during Halloween, is its atmosphere. While remade, the game still maintains the same DNA of the 2001 original, not straying in the slightest from the narrative and haunting setting in the slightest. For the uninitiated, Silent Hill 2 remake kicks off at an almost abandoned roadside overlook where players meet main character, James Sunderland, in a dingy rest stop bathroom. Sunderland is bent over a tiny sink, examining his face in a fogged-up mirror, almost like he’s checking to see if he’s real, if his surroundings are real.

Our main character then monologues while peering out at a scenic path cutting through a dense forest just beyond the overlook, expressing that he received a letter from his wife, Mary Shepherd-Sunderland, telling him to return to the couple’s “special place” in the sleepy, fog-blanketed town of Silent Hill. Plot twist: his wife died three years ago. How could this be? Armed with a photo of his deceased wife and her letter, James follows a path into the town shrouded in thick fog, setting out to find his wife. Could she really be there? Silent Hill 2 remake is a psychological horror, a macabre Lynchian romp through James’ psyche that manifests in the monsters and people players meet, and even the town itself.

The game deals with heavy themes of guilt, trauma, acceptance, and loss gracefully as players are forced to weave together a whirlwind story with James at the center. This isn’t a typical jump-scare cheap-thrills game, although there are jump scares galore for thrill seekers. Silent Hill 2 remake is a bone-chilling playthrough that will probably stick with players long after they’ve set the controller down. The remake’s voice acting is also incredible, a huge step up from the original with an emphasis on tone and emotion that makes players actually feel something. However, I will always hold a special place in my heart for the vocal stylings of James’ OG voice actor, Guy Cihi.

Silent Hill 2 remake is a magical experience that I so deeply wish I could erase from my mind, just so I could experience it for the first time all over again. I will never stop talking about the franchise. While Sony has decided to take the game off of PS Plus this Halloween, Silent Hill 2 remake is still available to purchase on PlayStation, Steam, and Xbox Series X|S, so players can still experience the survival horror title for themselves. This is a must-play.

In Silent Hill 2 Remake’s Absence, Here’s What You Should Play Instead

Despite Silent Hill 2 remake’s absence, there are still a slew of great horror titles available to play for PlayStation Plus members. A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead, Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, The Evil Within 2, Until Dawn, and The Exit 8 are great places to start if players want something chilling to play this Halloween. If that wasn’t enough, a handful of Resident Evil games are available to members right now, from the original Resident Evil trilogy to Resident Evil Village.

Like Silent Hill 2 remake, The Last of Us has become a cult classic in the horror video game world. It is just as heartbreaking as it is heart-pounding, with a story that will make you cry within minutes of booting it up. Thrust into a world destroyed by zombie-like creatures infected with a parasitic fungus, players pilot Joel Miller, a hardened survivor and smuggler still struggling with the death of his daughter, Sarah. Miller is tasked with taking a special little girl named Ellie across the country to a hospital run by a revolutionary militia group called the Fireflies. Why is Ellie so important? Well, she’s immune to the fungi. With her help, a vaccine can be created that will stop this infection in its tracks. She’s the cure for mankind.

Zombie games are a dime-a-dozen, but The Last of Us is masterful in its craft. Combat is fluid and snappy with a mix of stealth and run-and-gun, and the remastered version brings characters and settings to life with stunning graphical upgrades. Players can follow a variety of paths to success, choosing how they’d like to down enemies each time. The story is really where this game shines; however, the gameplay is just as addictive. If people play any game this Halloween season, let it be The Last of Us. I have played it around 25 times at this point, and I am still not sick of it.
