Some content in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the Nintendo Switch 2 will require players to shell out an extra $50. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a remake of the Nintendo 64 classic, rebuilt from the ground-up with significantly improved graphics, quality of life improvements, gameplay tweaks, and more. When The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time releases for the Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, it will retail for $59.99 digitally and $69.99 physically, with some having already expressing surprise at the price.
Nintendo is not shy about releasing its games for $80. Mario Kart World was Nintendo’s first $80 game, and the recently-released Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave dropped with an $80 price tag as well. Considering the dizzying hype behind the Ocarina of Time remake, many assumed that the game would also cost $80. Many fans had a positive reaction to the Ocarina of Time remake’s relatively cheaper price compared to some other big Nintendo releases, though it is worth pointing out that some content, though extremely minor in the grand scheme of things, is technically locked behind amiibo purchases.
Zelda and Link Masks Require Amiibo Figures to Unlock

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Switch 2 features masks based on how Link and Zelda looked in the Nintendo 64 original. These quirky masks don’t impact gameplay and are purely cosmetic, but it still might upset some fans to learn that they can’t be earned in-game (at least, nothing to that effect has been confirmed just yet). Based on the currently available information, the Zelda and Link masks can only be unlocked by tapping their corresponding amiibo, which retail for $24.99 each, or about $50 total before tax. To make matters worse, the Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo won’t even be available when Ocarina of Time launches on November 5. Fans will have to wait until the figures drop in 2027 to unlock the masks in the game.
Nintendo has not announced a specific release date for the Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo figures yet. And unfortunately, even those that are wanting to buy the figures may have a hard time getting their hands on them. The Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo figures are sold out at the time of this writing, and no restock dates have been announced. Language on Nintendo’s site does suggest that the figures will be restocked at some point down the line, so fans should keep an eye out.
There have been supply issues with various other items that were announced as part of the Zelda 40th Anniversary celebration. The Zelda-themed Switch 2 console sold out quick, for instance, though it has since been restocked (and sold out again). Considering the popularity of these items, one has to imagine that Nintendo will be working to replenish the supply sooner rather than later.
In any case, locking content behind amiibo figures is nothing new, though thankfully it’s never anything all that substantial. It’s still something that might upset some fans, though, especially those that expect their games to have everything available without the need for additional purchases. More information on the Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo availability should come to light at some point next year.
