Steam has accidentally leaked an upcoming title in its regular Free to Keep promotion ahead of time. Thanks to a listing on SteamDB, it appears that Pony Island will soon be available to claim 100% free on Steam.
Steam’s Free to Keep promotion regularly hands out free games for users to claim and add to their libraries forever. It’s rare that nothing is active for players to grab for free on Steam. Right now, Steam has two DLC freebies for Rotwood and MXGP 26, but there are no full games on the Free to Keep promotion.
In SteamDB’s “Potentially Upcoming Free Promotions” page, puzzle game Pony Island has appeared with a limited free promotional package being placed on Steam’s backend a few days ago. This usually signals the intention for the game to arrive on Steam’s Free to Keep promotion in the coming weeks or months.
It’s worth noting that these are simply planned promotions. While most do eventually make it onto Steam’s Free to Keep promotion and become available for gamers to claim, not every one does. So while Pony Island may become 100% free in the future, there’s no absolute guarantee.
For those interested, Pony Island is described by its developer as “a suspense puzzle game in disguise,” where players are trapped inside a “malfunctioning arcade machine devised by the devil himself.” Despite what the name of the game might suggest, Pony Island “is not a game about ponies.”
Steam doesn’t announce its Free to Keep games ahead of time, and doesn’t even promote them when they’re active. That’s why gamers who want to take advantage of these promotions have to be proactive about finding them. PC gamers who use multiple platforms can always find freebies, with services like Itch.io and the Epic Games Store running their own regular free-game promotions.
