Capcom Wants to Turn RE Engine Into AI Generation

Capcom has officially revealed plans to improve upon its RE Engine and convert it into an engine for AI game generation, utilizing the engine to speed up some more tedious parts of game development. Capcom has previously confirmed that it uses AI to assist with the development of its games.

While Capcom’s signature RE Engine gets its name from the Resident Evil franchise, the game engine has gone far beyond the survival horror series. Capcom has used the RE Engine for many of its biggest properties, including development on games like Street Fighter 6, Devil May Cry 5, and even Monster Hunter Rise on the Nintendo Switch. Capcom has used the RE Engine multiple times for the Mega Man franchise as well, particularly for the Star Force Legacy Collection and the upcoming Mega Man: Dual Override. Now, Capcom has revealed the next step for the RE Engine, one that may prove particularly controversial.

Capcom’s Hot Streak Continues With Another Impressive Milestone Announcement

Capcom shared its future plans for the RE Engine during the studio’s recent Open Conference RE:2026. Programmer Satoshi Ishida revealed a new project for the RE Engine referred to as “REX,” which will see the engine upgraded and converted into an “AI-generation game engine.” The scope of REX is expected to be heavily on development rather than front-facing content, aiming to improve efficiency, performance, and quality assurance for Capcom’s newer games. Capcom also said that it intends to use REX to “create games together with AI,” speeding up development processes instead of contributing to the final product.

Capcom’s intentions for REX largely align with the studio’s previous stance on artificial intelligence in gaming. The studio commented on the use of AI in games during a shareholders meeting in early 2026, stating that Capcom does not intend to implement AI-generated content in its games. The studio has stated that it mainly uses AI for other game development purposes, such as relying on AI to create ideas that would be fleshed out by artists and potentially for graphics upscaling.

The use of AI-generated assets has been one of the biggest hot-button issues in gaming in recent years. Many game developers have come under scrutiny for the use, or alleged use, of AI-generated assets in games, prompting Steam to implement an AI disclosure policy that requires games to publicly state if AI was used during development. Epic Games also came under heavy scrutiny for its use of AI-generated voices in Fortnite, with SAG-AFTRA filing charges against the studio for its use of an AI-generated Darth Vader voice without receiving proper permissions.

Capcom has already seen a busy year in 2026, with a multitude of major releases throughout the year. The studio officially launched Resident Evil Requiem in February as the franchise’s ninth main-series game, quickly becoming the fastest-selling Resident Evil game of all time. Pragmata was also a notable success for the studio, with the sci-fi action-adventure game selling more than 2 million copies within 16 days of the game’s release in April. The use of AI to speed up and improve Capcom’s development process aims to lead the studio to even more success in the future.
