Although Emergence has just begun with the recent release of Gears of War: E-Day, Xbox game studio The Coalition is already talking about the future. That’s not necessarily uncommon in game development, but the wider issue here is that the comments follow fear of new layoffs at The Coalition. Gears of War: E-Day story director Juan Vaca’s layoff just days after announcing it had gone gold, highlighting how tumultuous everything at Xbox is.
The Coalition (including Vaca) has spent years building toward Gears of War: E-Day, making its development one of the longer waits in the franchise’s history. The game serves as a prequel to the original Gears of War, allowing The Coalition to revisit the early days of Marcus Fenix and the Locust invasion while using modern technology to push the series forward. With E-Day now providing a new foundation for the franchise, attention is already turning toward what Xbox and The Coalition could do next.
Future Gears of War Games After E-Day
That future was directly addressed by The Coalition studio head Mike Crump, in a statement to the BBC, who says Gears of War: E-Day will provide a “great foundation” for future games in the series. Pointedly, Crump also says “the next game will not take nearly as long” to make. The comment is one of the clearest indications yet that Xbox and The Coalition are thinking beyond E-Day and already see a future for Gears of War games that can move at a faster pace, although that’s likely due to considerable up-top pressure.

Reports have also suggested that some developers at The Coalition have been concerned about potential layoffs following Gears of War: E-Day‘s release. Asked about those concerns by the BBC, Crump focused on the things the studio can control, saying the team needed to concentrate on “shipping a great game that people are going to love.” He added that he feels The Coalition has accomplished exactly that. In that context, his comments about the next Gears of War arriving sooner carry some additional weight, especially as Xbox continues to reshape how its studios approach development.
It’s also worth mentioning that Xbox has mentioned Gears of War in every breath alongside other iconic games like Halo and Fable. Xbox just established its new XP division, where the goal appears to be to expand its IPs into movies, TV, and other sorts of entertainment. Beyond games, it stands to reason that Gears‘ future may cross over to the big screen, different screens, or be beyond just games.
For now, The Coalition’s immediate focus remains on Gears of War: E-Day, but the studio is clearly thinking beyond its latest release. A shorter development cycle could allow Gears of War to become a much more consistent presence in Xbox’s exclusive games lineup, instead of a franchise that disappears for years between major entries.
