The Witcher 3 Remastered Mods Prove Why Skyrim Still Matters

The Witcher 3 Remastered Mods Prove Why Skyrim Still Matters

There is something amusing about how quickly The Witcher 3 Remastered has started collecting mods. Within just two days of launch, more than 450 mods had already been released or updated for the game, including familiar community staples such as Fast Travel From Anywhere and Enhanced Camera. I love seeing numbers like that because they tell me something a prettier texture pack never could: that people are already finding new reasons to mess around in a game they thought they knew.

Of course, we’ve all seen this happen with The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim for years. Its mod scene has become such a huge part of the game’s identity that it is increasingly difficult to separate the RPG’s longevity from the community that has kept experimenting with it. The Witcher 3 Remastered obviously has a long way to go before it reaches that point, but seeing hundreds of mods arrive so quickly makes me wonder whether CD Projekt Red’s RPG could be heading toward a similar kind of second life. 450-plus mods in two days is a pretty loud opening statement, and the real test of this remaster will be whether players are still finding new ways to fall back in love with it years from now.

The Witcher 3 Remastered Just Broke a Steam Record, and RPG Remasters Should Take Notes

The Witcher 3 Remastered just set a new Steam record, showing that the best RPG remasters do more than make old games look prettier.

Skyrim’s Mod Scene Changed the Rules

When I think about games that refuse to disappear, Skyrim is always the first that comes to mind. Bethesda’s RPG has now been around for nearly 15 years and has even been re-released across platforms an insane number of times. It continues to attract players who somehow have not yet decided whether they want to save the world or spend 40 hours picking flowers (which is the beauty of the game, really). Its longevity, however, cannot be pinned entirely on mods. But I have to admit, the modding community has given Skyrim a powerful way to keep changing after Bethesda has moved on to other projects.

Console in One

Put the consoles in the correct order.

Todd Howard himself has acknowledged how much the mod community has contributed to Skyrim’s extraordinary staying power. Speaking about the ever-growing wait for The Elder Scrolls 6, he said: “Anything we put it out on, it becomes a hit game. And they love it, they still play it, it’s almost infinitely playable, all of the mods and everything like that.” I don’t spend most of my time playing heavily modded games, but I can still see why Todd Howard considers the ecosystem is so powerful: every new mod gives someone another excuse to return to an RPG they may have already finished several times.

When I think about games that refuse to disappear, Skyrim is always the first that comes to mind.

Though more than 450 mods being released or updates within two days is not proof that The Witcher 3 Remastered is about to become the next Skyrim, it does show that its community is already willing to put work into extending the experience, and I think that one of the next questions could be whether those mods will eventually become more than merely fixes and enhancements. There has been a rapid growth of cross-game mods that have been gaining popularity and exposure online, and these mods make fundamental changes to the heart of games, rather than just improving the player experience.

The Witcher 3 Has Plenty to Tinker With

I have never been the sort of player who installs 50 mods onto a game, but I completely understand why The Witcher 3 is such an appealing game to tinker with. There is already so much packed into CD Projekt Red’s RPG that even relatively small changes can give a familiar playthrough a different feel. Within two days of The Witcher 3 Remastered launching, more than 450 mods had already been released or updated. What really catches my attention, though, is that some of these aren’t brand-new ideas. Mods that players have been using for years are being updated to survive alongside the remastered version.

I might happily play The Witcher 3 without changing much at all, but I can see the appeal of returning to an enormous RPG and having the option to reshape the parts that have started to feel familiar. Maybe I want faster travel, a different camera, or even just a small quality-of-life improvement, which isn’t uncommon when players spend up to hundreds of hours in RPGs. I think that’s where The Witcher 3 Remastered could stand out, because the game doesn’t need mods to be good, and I certainly wouldn’t argue that every player should use them. But when a community is already this eager to modify a game within days of its release, I can’t help but wonder what this scene could look like a few years down the line. Skyrim showed me that a game’s life can become much stranger and more unpredictable when players are given the freedom to mess with it a bit.

Mods Can Keep Familiar Adventures Feeling New

I’m a sucker for nostalgia, and when I do return to old games, there is always that strange moment when I know what is coming next. I remember where a quest begins, which character I need to talk to, and probably which bandit is about to ruin my afternoon. The Witcher 3 is particularly susceptible to that feeling because its world is so unforgettable.

When a community is already this eager to modify a game within days of its release, I can’t help but wonder what this scene could look like a few years down the line.

I have spent enough time in Velen and Novigrad to recognize plenty of their sights, so the idea of mods gradually changing how I experience that world is quite intriguing, even if I am not someone who normally plays with a heavily modded setup. Here, the Skyrim comparisons become more meaningful, because the thousands of mods give players completely different reasons to return. I don’t need all of that myself to appreciate what it does for the game, but if the mod diversity scene continues to grow, coming back to the Continent years from now might not feel like replaying the same old adventure at all.

The Mods That Keep Skyrim Alive

Let’s look at Skyrim‘s most popular mods. I don’t think you can properly appreciate how much the community has added to Bethesda’s RPG without looking at the mods themselves. SkyUI makes Skyrim more convenient, USSEP cleans up rough edges, Skyrim 202X makes it prettier, Ordinator changes character progression, and Alternate Start can completely change how a new playthrough begins. All of these mods let players decide what they want Skyrim to become, and it explains why people (myself included) are still returning to Tamriel all these years later.

Convenient Horses is a great example of a useful mod, because it makes mounts much more practical during exploration, especially with a follower or companion. This is exactly the kind of practical addition I can appreciate.

Overall, I don’t think The Witcher 3 Remastered needs to become the next Skyrim. Honestly, it’s a crazy standard to set after only two days, but it shows how powerful the mod scene is. In my opinion, The Witcher 3 already has the world, characters, quests, and sheer amount of content to make repeat playthroughs exciting. But nonetheless, it’s worth keeping an eye on the scale of the mod scene as we wait for new content from both The Witcher and The Elder Scrolls.
