According to a recent leak, the Watch Dogs franchise could be making a comeback in 2027 with a new, albeit familiar entry. This new, rumored Watch Dogs release is said to be a ‘Director’s Cut’ of Watch Dogs: Legion, the third entry in the action-adventure hacking-focused series.
The first entry in Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs series will always live in infamy, with its original E3 2012 reveal trailer boasting much more impressive visuals than the finished product released two years later. Despite the noticeable gap in technical prowess between reveal and launch, the first Watch Dogs earned a favorable critical reception and went on to sell 10 million copies by the end of 2014. This success spawned a direct follow-up in 2016, which itself earned a warm critical and commercial reception. The same can’t be said, however, for Watch Dogs‘ third and final entry.
Watch Dogs: Legion Director’s Cut Could Release in 2027
Back in January, Tom Henderson claimed on the Insider Gaming Podcast that the Watch Dogs franchise was “completely dead,” and that there were no plans to revive it at Ubisoft. Just a month later, Henderson spoke again on the Insider Gaming Podcast, claiming that he’d learned that a “director’s cut” of Watch Dogs: Legion is actually in development.

Details of this rumored Watch Dogs: Legion Director’s Cut were scarce, but Henderson claimed that a dedicated “night mode” was being implemented, and that Ubisoft was going out of its way to conduct brand-new motion capture sessions for it. Henderson theorized that this was indicative of Ubisoft’s broader future plans — that the company plans on releasing more remasters, remakes, and special editions of already-released titles as opposed to delivering brand-new games.
Just a few days ago, Insider Gaming published a follow-up report. In this report, Insider Gaming claimed that the rumored Watch Dogs: Legion Director’s Cut is still in the works and that it’s currently set to release in the “first half of 2027.” No additional information about the Director’s Cut’s new content or content changes were provided in this latest report.
The notion that Ubisoft is potentially working on a sort of remaster of Watch Dogs: Legion has caused quite a stir online, with Legion being widely regarded as the series’ worst entry, and the reason for the franchise’s dormancy in the last six years or so. On OpenCritic, Watch Dogs: Legion has a Top Critic Average score of 74 and a critic recommendation score of 60%. These numbers aren’t terrible, but they pale in comparison to the first two Watch Dogs entries, with the first game earning a Top Critic Average of 79, and the second earning a score of 82. While Watch Dogs: Legion arguably had the most ambitious premise and plot of the series, and its defining mechanic that allowed players to recruit any NPC was certainly intriguing, it isn’t the Watch Dogs entry that most fans would want to see remastered.
