Fortune’s Weave Turns One Familiar RPG Habit Against the Player

Fortune’s Weave Turns One Familiar RPG Habit Against the Player

Very few people can deny that there’s something incredibly satisfying about filling up a meter in an RPG. And after years of watching different bars slowly reach 100%, most players have learned that this usually means something good is about to happen. This makes sense, considering how often games reward players for reaching that final milestone. Moreover, getting stronger is basically the entire point of most RPGs. However, it seems like Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is determined to make players question this habit.

The tactical RPG introduces a mechanic called the Blaze Gauge, which builds up whenever characters use powerful abilities known as Blaze Arts. Everything seems pretty straightforward until players discover that reaching its maximum capacity in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave comes with some rather unpleasant consequences. And if you usually celebrate seeing that bar hit 100%, you might want to think twice this time around.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Beginner Tips and Tricks

Check this guide out for everything you need to know to get started in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave!

Blaze Arts Make Resisting the Temptation Surprisingly Difficult

When it comes to Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, not only should players resist the habit of filling up their meters, but they should also resist another temptation. Blaze Arts are not just stronger attacks that do more damage; they are different for each of the four main heroes and can be useful in many situations. For example, Cai can use fire attacks that cover huge areas, while Leda can strengthen her allies and even summon a powerful monster.

This means that players wouldn’t want to save those abilities only for very difficult enemies because they could be useful against any opponent. And it’s true that using Blaze Arts costs HP, but once you fill up 50% of the Blaze Gauge, you get an additional power boost. This essentially puts players in a situation where they are constantly tempted to use Blaze Arts because it helps them become even stronger, but at the same time, they should also resist the urge to completely fill up the meter because the game will punish them. There is probably a very specific way to get the most out of this mechanic, so it will be interesting to see players experiment with it.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is available exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.

Filling the Blaze Gauge Comes With a Brutal Punishment

If you’re just hearing about this mechanic in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, you’re probably wondering what exactly happens when you fill up the Blaze Gauge. Well, instead of unlocking a more powerful bonus as it usually happens in RPGs, you trigger the so-called Burst, which removes the existing boosts and reduces the character’s maximum HP by half. Without a doubt, this is a very serious punishment for doing something that most RPGs actually encourage players to do. On the other hand, creating a challenge by exploiting an RPG habit is what I would call evil genius.

In any case, if you’re not careful while using this mechanic, you may trigger a series of unfortunate events, especially in a game like Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, where positioning and planning ahead are crucial. Players need to consider how close they are to their enemies, how vulnerable they might be to their attacks, and what it would mean to have their character lose half of their maximum HP. This is especially important in situations where you need to be as powerful as possible because these are exactly the situations that make players become too greedy for their own good.

Sometimes Knowing When to Stop Is the Best Strategy

Thankfully, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave has other tools that players can use apart from Blaze Arts. For example, the game also features the so-called Combat Arts, which consume weapon durability rather than HP, which could give players a different approach to combat without relying on the same ability every single time and exhausting their HP constantly. Moreover, using Blessings could help players reduce incoming damage, so generally, players will have a lot of options when it comes to deciding how to approach a particular situation. In other words, although Blaze Arts could be helpful in any situation, it doesn’t mean that players should take the risk and use them every single time.

Perhaps what makes the Blaze Gauge so interesting is that instead of encouraging players to constantly chase power boosts, it makes knowing when to stop equally important. Realistically, this isn’t something that most people are very good at, even in real life, especially those who love taking risks. And it may even just be human nature to keep going when something is going particularly well, even if you know that pushing your luck could ruin everything. In any case, it would be interesting to see whether most players will learn to be more cautious or whether the temptation of hitting 100% on that Blaze Gauge will prove too difficult to resist. Of course, considering how much RPG players enjoy experimenting with different mechanics, some might deliberately push the system to its limits.
