A Pokemon card featuring artwork of Zorua that was drawn by a 6-year-old fan from Japan was sold at a late September auction for an eye-catching price of $156,000. The Pokemon card that was sold for six figures was just one of approximately a hundred cards that were printed in limited quantities.
Although the Pokemon Trading Card Game remains a popular hobby for fans and collectible enthusiasts alike, the game has also drawn the attention of scalpers. As Pokemon TCG products continue to fly off the shelves to be resold for ridiculous prices, fans have called on The Pokemon Company and retailers to intervene. In response, Target staff members have removed the seals from Elite Trainer Boxes as a way to drive down the resale value of the products in question, which may deter scalpers trying to make a profit.
Rare Zorua Pokemon Card Fetches $156,000 at Auction

While some Pokemon cards are known for featuring eye-catching artwork, one fan’s contribution to the series fetched a high price at a late auction. A Zorua card that featured artwork drawn by then-six-year-old Megu Taniguchi was sold through Fanatics Collect for $156,000 at an auction that closed on September 27. The card was graded as PSA 10 Gem Mint and had 38 bids. Only 100 copies of the Zorua promo card featuring Taniguchi’s artwork were printed, which added value to the card in question. Taniguchi’s drawing depicted Zorua riding on a red bus alongside Pikachu and another individual. The drawing was made as part of a 2010 contest to celebrate the theatrical release of the Pokemon anime movie Zoroark: Master of Illusions in Japan. Ergo, both the card and artwork are 16 years old as of this writing. Taniguchi was chosen as the Kindergarten Winner of the promotion and received both prize money and a small print run of the cards she drew art for.

Since the Zorua card was released as part of a promotion, it was never included in traditional Pokemon TCG booster packs. However, it is unclear if the card that was sold for $156,000 was from Taniguchi’s prize print or through another print run altogether. Though the PSA 10 Gem Mint Zorua card fetched a high price, a separate auction featuring Raincoat Pikachu sold for $8.4 million through Fanatics Collect on the same day with 84 bids. In short, selling high-grade Pokemon cards continues to be a lucrative endeavor for all involved.
Though Pokemon card auctions are a surefire way to obtain rare cards, some card collectors have also used illicit methods to know when a product drop will occur. In September 2026, a 72-year-old Ohio man pleaded no contest after he was arrested for illegally placing a GPS tracker in the vehicle of a Pokemon card restock vendor.
With the Pokemon TCG continuing to release new products from the 30th Celebration set, the card game is showing no signs of slowing down in popularity. With the Mega Evolution – Delta Reign expansion launching on November 6, it remains to be seen how many cards will be printed to satisfy demand.
