Fortune’s Weave Officially Fixed Three Houses’ Most Exhausting Problem

Fortune’s Weave Officially Fixed Three Houses’ Most Exhausting Problem

Those who have spent countless hours playing an RPG only to realize that they’ve barely scratched the surface of the story just know that there’s a very specific, frustrating feeling that comes with it. Fire Emblem: Three Houses is quite a good example of this approach to storytelling, as it allows players to choose between three houses with separate routes revealing different sides of the world. However, in order to experience the alternative routes, players have to start an entirely new playthrough.

Fortunately or not, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is taking an entirely different approach. This time, the game introduces four different protagonists. And although each one of them has a story of their own, in the end they gradually come together as part of one overarching narrative. This doesn’t force players to commit to a single perspective from the beginning, and if everything works as intended, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave could offer a good alternative to how some RPGs handle multiple story routes.

Many players would agree that one of the biggest weaknesses of Three Houses is exactly the fact that choosing a house means committing to a particular version of the story. Of course, there isn’t anything inherently wrong with this approach, as Three Houses is not the first game to use it, especially considering that many people actually prefer access to different perspectives. However, starting an entirely new playthrough can sometimes be exhausting, especially when it takes an insane amount of time to reach the end again.

When it comes to Fortune’s Weave, players can switch between four protagonists: Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda. This means that exploring their motivations can happen without committing to a storyline, and you can also switch between them in whatever order you’d like. Ultimately, it’s easy to see why it seems like this approach preserves the excitement of seeing different perspectives without making the experience tedious. Moreover, although Three Houses‘ structure is a good way to encourage repeated playthroughs, it requires players to invest a significant amount of time that they do not always have.

Fortune’s Weave Makes Progress Across Different Routes Important

One of the best things about Fortune’s Weave‘s approach is that switching between protagonists doesn’t mean leaving your discoveries behind. Each one of the protagonists has their own group of allies who can recruit additional characters as well. Players can develop these same allies differently while following Cai’s and Dietrich’s stories, and the progress made in both versions will eventually be taken into account and combined. In other words, developing characters along one route can benefit you beyond this particular storyline. This same approach applies to exploration as well, as locations discovered on one route also become available on the others.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is available exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.

Considering how much time it takes to explore an RPG world, many would agree that this is a great decision. On the other hand, we have Three Houses, where the different campaigns just function like separate experiences in terms of progression, not necessarily contributing to something greater. Overall, Fortune’s Weave has the potential to make exploring feel much more rewarding for a lot of people, since the time investment could matter much more in the bigger picture. Moreover, it’s important to mention that each route in Three Houses offers its own version of how events unfold, while Fortune’s Weave gradually brings its four protagonists together during the second half of the story, so the conclusion is shared.

What’s even more interesting is that bringing these stories together required the devs to introduce an additional character during the development phase of the game called Eshmel. According to the team, the story needed someone who could offer a broader perspective on the four protagonists and help connect their individual journeys properly, which is an interesting detail that shows how much work it takes to make four separate storylines feel like part of the same narrative.

Fortune’s Weave Might Actually Be the Better Compromise

At the end of the day, none of this means that Fortune’s Weave has found the perfect way to tell a story in an RPG. After all, many people actually prefer the way Three Houses approaches storytelling from multiple perspectives, and they don’t mind the time investment that comes with it. Moreover, choosing a particular side has its own charm, as your decision carries actual weight and determines which version of the conflict you get to witness, which is, in a way, exactly what makes the experience feel meaningful and memorable.

Fortune’s Weave is willing to make that trade-off in exchange for a more connected experience, and whether this approach becomes successful in the long run or not depends on many factors, including how interesting the individual stories are and how many people prefer to spend less time on playthroughs. In any case, it’s definitely a fresh approach, and making several perspectives contribute to one larger adventure sounds quite promising, to say the least.
