New Saros Update Just Made Its Toughest Runs Worth Showing Off

New Saros Update Just Made Its Toughest Runs Worth Showing Off

There have been a lot of great games that have come out this year, and I fully believe that Saros is one of the most underappreciated on the list. A game like Saros is a far more niche experience, so I wasn’t exactly surprised that it flew under the radar, but developer Housemarque just released a fresh update that proves there is still plenty of life left in the mind-bending roguelite shooter. The update is called Zenith, and it brings a treasure trove of fresh content. However, one of the main highlights is how it treats in-game player trophies.

Achievements and trophies in gaming have been the norm for a long time now, and while there are a lot of gamers who love them, they don’t really mean much of anything. It can feel satisfying to get a ping mid-playthrough that you’ve gained an achievement, but the virtual rewards also quickly get buried in one’s player profile. It’s a digital trophy shelf that doesn’t bring the same sense of accomplishment that a physical reward does. Granted, Saros‘ Zenith update doesn’t reward players physically, but it does offer something that feels more real than the run-of-the-mill trophies.

Saros: Carcosan Eclipse, Explained

Carcosan Eclipse is a unique mechanic in Saros that turns up the enemy difficulty and changes up the game’s world and progression.

Saros Players Can Now Prove That They Have Truly Earned Their Trophies

There are a lot of new features in the Zenith update, but the one I’m focusing on the most is what Housemarque has officially named “Eclipse Layers.” It’s essentially Saros‘ version of New Game Plus, and each Eclipse Layer unlocks a much more challenging version of the game. New rules and Trial Modifiers are even thrown into the equation, making it the perfect unpredictable playground for the most hardcore Saros players. Modifiers in Saros are an important piece of the game’s DNA, and as players progress with these challenging add-ons, the game literally puts a spotlight on how skilled players are by giving Arjun a golden crown and armor.

This isn’t just some kind of cosmetic, though. When players take on more trials, Arjun’s crown and armor continue to glow, emitting a seriously powerful aura. I know it’s not necessarily essential for playing the game, but it’s a great way for players to show off just how skilled they are at a game like Saros.

The power of Arjun’s crown is also tied to unlocking specific collectibles called Visions. Certain Visions require more powerful levels in order to unlock these in-game messages.

Those who have played Saros know very well that it is not an easy game. It’s definitely more forgiving than playing Returnal for the first time, but just because Housemarque made its roguelite shooting formula more accessible doesn’t mean that Saros is a walk in the park. Jumping into Saros is still sweat-inducing, and Zenith aims to have the most dedicated players gripping their controllers with white knuckles.

Housemarque’s New Saros Update Is a Great Demonstration of How Games Need to Make Rewards Actually Matter

With Saros on the Horizon, One PlayStation Release Feels Inevitable

I’m aware that it’s not like Housemarque has invented fire or anything, but a lot of developers have gotten stuck in the habit of simply making an in-game reward a trophy or achievement that doesn’t add anything to the actual gameplay experience. Sure, players can show off the list of trophies in their library, but something like Arjun’s golden crown makes skill level clear in a far more satisfying way. Showing off a skill level in a single-player game is far less common compared to some of the most popular multiplayer games out there, and for an understandable reason. When players are pitted against each other in an online match, skill signifiers can intimidate other players.

Just because Housemarque made its roguelite shooting formula more accessible doesn’t mean that Saros is a walk in the park.

The Fortnite Victory Crown is one of the most well-known versions of this. Some may find it unnecessary for these kinds of features to be in single-player games, but I believe they are just as important. Whether it’s a single-player or multiplayer game, these kinds of features add a fun extra incentive to push oneself to be better than the last playthrough. When it comes to an action-packed roguelite shooter like Saros, the struggle and challenge are the backbone of the entire experience, and players deserve to get visual cues that actually showcase how well they are doing.

A Look at the Other Gameplay Features Added in Saros’ Zenith Update

  • Eclipse Layers
  • 10 Trial Modifiers
  • 10 Protection Modifiers
  • Slow Game Speed
  • Auto-Fire
  • Motion Sensor Aiming
  • 12 Visions (Collectibles)
  • Overlord Rush (Boss Rush Mode)

Based on the above details, it’s clear that the Zenith update isn’t just for players who want a sweat-inducing fight through Carcosa. Zenith is just as much for the gamers who want to know what Saros is all about but also desire a more accessible experience. There are some gameplay accessibility naysayers out there, but Housemarque has done it the right way. Instances like the Marvel’s Wolverine scent trail controversy give these kinds of features a bad reputation. However, when added as optional gameplay tweaks, it’s a great way to expand a game’s audience. So, whether a high-level player has been craving a deeper challenge or a gamer wants to check out the roguelite for the first time, the Zenith update brings Saros to new heights.
