PlayStation Still Officially Supporting Physical Sales After January 2028

PlayStation Still Officially Supporting Physical Sales After January 2028

PlayStation will officially support game disc production after January 2028, offering slight clarification to its original announcement. To be clear, PlayStation will no longer make discs for any new PS5 games released after January 2028, but that does not mean it will no longer produce discs.

After the initial announcement, PlayStation was asked about its presence at physical retailers. Brick-and-mortar stores like GameStop were among the first hurt by the industry’s shift to digital games, which was a warning sign that eventually the biggest players in the field would likely move away too. As such, it seems many retailers were concerned about the knock-on effects of PlayStation’s exit from the market.

Sony is reportedly reassuring publishers and retailers that physical PlayStation games will still be sold in stores after January 2028, despite the company’s decision to stop producing disc editions of new releases. According to Game File, Sony will continue accepting orders for existing physical games released before January 2028, alongside new non-disc products. In other words, it’s not that any new PlayStation game or PlayStation exclusive released in 2027 has a more limited shelf life for now. It stands to reason that someday there may not be a reason to continue support for re-orders or non-disc products if the shift toward digital continues.

Importantly, PlayStation games released before January 2028 will not be affected by the new policy, and retailers will still be able to order additional copies of those existing disc releases after the deadline. This means major PS5 games launching throughout 2027, like Until Dawn 2, God of War Laufey, or the plethora of third-party releases, will still receive support long after release. Beyond producing more discs for these games, previously released discs could remain in production for years, even as newer games move exclusively to digital distribution. January 2028 marks the end of new disc-based PlayStation releases, not necessarily the end of PlayStation discs appearing on store shelves.

The clarification may offer some reassurance to retailers, but it does little to address concerns about game ownership and preservation. Physical discs allow players to maintain access to compatible games without relying entirely on digital storefronts, although patches and online requirements can complicate matters. There’s also the matter of consumer trust. PlayStation has called digital ownership “impossible” and removes digital items not just from the PlayStation Store, but from PlayStation owners’ digital libraries.

One reason Xbox lost the “console war” is because the PS4/Xbox One generation was when players settled into digital libraries. Because of that “impossible,” yet perceived, digital ownership, many gamers were all-in on the idea of the PlayStation ecosystem. Yet, with next-gen PS6 and Xbox consoles looking at well over $1000 price tags and the idea of digital ownership under fire, the PS5/Xbox Series X generation feels stranger than ever.
