According to the Associate Game Director of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, around “half” of the game’s quest team have a background in modding CD Projekt Red’s previous games. As the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel’s quest team, these former modders are charged with creating and implementing a range of story-driven quests.
CD Projekt Red has always had a close and very visible relationship with the modding community. The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 have some of the most active modding communities in the industry, coming only a little behind games like Skyrim and Fallout. CD Projekt Red has also frequently stated just how much it appreciates fan content and how it keeps a close eye on what’s being created. It seems CD Projekt Red is also keeping a close eye on the modders themselves.
‘Half’ of Cyberpunk 2’s Quest Team Are Former Modders
In a recent REDstreams livestream dedicated to Cyberpunk 2077‘s 2.5 update (at around the 27-minute mark), the Associate Game Director of the Cyberpunk sequel, Pawel Sasko, spoke openly about the influence the modding community has had on the first game and its in-development sequel. Sasko says that, in his opinion, modding is a great “foot-in-the-door technique, and a gateway into game dev,” as a modder was initially just a player who started experimenting with customizing a game.
It seems the wider studio agrees with Sasko’s sentiment, as the Associate Game Director confirms that “CD Projekt Red actually hired so many modders.” According to Sasko, “half of the quest team” for Cyberpunk 2 are “all former modders.” Sasko adds that modding is a “wonderful way to actually start your career” as it lets players “learn and see how to actually build” games.
Earlier in the steam, the roundtable of CD Projekt developers discussed the addition of cross-platform mods in Cyberpunk 2077‘s latest 2.5 update. When asked about the importance of mods in Cyberpunk 2077‘s post-launch development, Sasko says that the “modding community is really keeping the game alive,” and that CD Projekt Red is “often looking at what our modders are doing, what they’re building.” Sasko energetically states that these mods are “very exciting” and that the wider studio “always tries to support our modding community as much as we can.”
Along with full cross-platform mod support, Cyberpunk 2077‘s 2.5 update added a suite of new content to the almost six-year-old game. Two brand-new quests were added with Cyberpunk 2077‘s latest update, along with a new dual-wielding perk, an entirely new Cyberware customization system, and some content inspired by the Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime. Meanwhile, the official sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is still making its way quietly through development, with over 180 CD Projekt developers reportedly working on the game as of July.
