A new rumor suggests that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4‘s extraction shooter DMZ mode will be getting brand-new, PvP-focused content in the coming weeks. This new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ content will allegedly appear in the form of a new, small-scale map, currently known as ‘XO1.’
Making its debut in November 2022, Call of Duty DMZ is a PvPvE extraction shooter mode that sees up to 60 players drop onto a large Warzone-like map filled with distinct POIs. The player’s goal is to loot valuable items, complete specific missions, and successfully extract from the map, all while facing off against both fellow players and AI-controlled opponents. After a brief hiatus, Call of Duty‘s DMZ mode has returned in full force in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Mode Could Get New PvP Map in Season 1
According to a recent Twitter post from DETONATED, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 could be adding a brand-new DMZ map in Season 1, one that’s said to have more of a PvP focus than the mode’s default Hajin map. This upcoming new map is allegedly called ‘XO1’, but it’s currently unclear if this is the map’s final name or just what Infinity Ward is calling the map internally. Similarly, Infinity Ward has not officially confirmed that a new map is coming to DMZ in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Season 1, which is set to begin on November 6. For now, its existence and imminent release is purely a rumor.
DETONATED claims that this upcoming XO1 map will share some similarities with the ‘Building 21’ map, which was added to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2‘s DMZ mode in December 2022. Initially, Building 21 was available to players for just 24 hours, before becoming available only on weekends, and then eventually being accessible with no restrictions nine months after its debut. Where DMZ’s original Al Mazrah map featured a huge playground for players to explore, Building 21 offered a much smaller-scale, more claustrophobic environment, leading to far more frequent player-vs-player encounters.
The potential addition of a PvP-focused map similar to Building 21 is already proving to be quite a controversial decision. One of the biggest criticisms surrounding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4‘s DMZ mode at launch is that the mode feels a little too aggressive, with a good portion of players focusing primarily on hunting down other players rather than exploring or looting for themselves. Many fans actually desire a PvE-focused mode instead, one that gives new players some more room to breathe.
An official roadmap for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 is yet to be revealed. That said, there are a few new pieces of content confirmed to be coming to the shooter within the next few days. The fan-favorite Call of Duty map Shipment will arrive on October 27, while the Halloween-themed Possession and Infected modes head to Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer on October 29 and 30 respectively.
