After more than 22 years, fans may think they’ve seen everything from GTA: San Andreas. However, a brand-new mod has proven this wrong, showing that creative modders can still innovate in GTA: San Andreas.
It’s fascinating to see how the GTA: San Andreas modding community has evolved over the years. While many gamers have long moved on from Rockstar’s 2004 title, many continue to play it as their GTA game of choice, aided by the huge number of mods still being released. Just recently, another GTA: San Andreas mod added zombies to the game, giving it a hint of Undead Nightmare. Hopefully this kind of innovation continues for a long time to come, even if it’s just to see how far the game can be pushed at this point.
GTA: San Andreas Mod Adds Environmental Destruction
A brand-new GTA: San Andreas mod has added Red Faction-style environmental destruction to the game. Available from chris-efpunkt on GitHub, the mod makes it so that every explosion in the game, including grenades, rockets, satchel charges, and exploding vehicles, “carves a real crater into the original world. Thin roofs, walls and bridge decks can be blown through, craters can be joined into tunnels, and trees and lamp posts are knocked over.” This affects the collision, leaving a lasting, playable impact on the game world.
Footage of the mod was posted on X by user TheCanadianGTR, and it looks pretty incredible. It shows entire buildings being leveled by the player’s explosions, and shows them exploring the ruins of their destruction. There’s an important note here – destruction is limited to the outside world in the mod, so interiors remain completely intact. Still, this is a truly game-changing mod that puts a fresh spin on GTA: San Andreas.
It’s a testament to the quality of GTA: San Andreas and its legacy that fans are still creating these kinds of mods after all this time. It was the best-selling game on the PS2, cementing its iconic status, and even with the release of newer GTA games, it still holds up in 2026.
Over the next few weeks, attention will naturally turn to GTA 6 as Rockstar gears up to release the long-awaited sequel, which is widely expected to be the biggest game launch of all time. It’s certainly an exciting time for fans, as a 13-year wait finally comes to an end. Expectations for GTA 6 are enormous, and Rockstar has taken its sweet time to ensure it can live up to them.
