New Open-World RPG Looks Like Game Boy Color Pokemon, and It’s Perfect for Switch 2

October’s Nintendo Indie World showcase has come and gone, and open-world RPG Petal Runner was an event highlight. With its throwback world design, Petal Runner looks like the perfect game to bring gamers back to a time when playing Pokemon Yellow on the Game Boy Color was seen as the apex of gaming. Oozing with charm and retro-fueled mechanics, Petal Runner and the Switch 2 are bound to be a match made in heaven.

I want to make it clear that Petal Runner is not another creature collection game. Ever since Palworld first entered early access in 2024 and became a huge hit, there has been an influx of new creature collection games that are riding the “Pokemon killer” wave. Petal Runner doesn’t have a creature-catching loop, but it does have a focus on digital pets. Animal-like companions are still part of the equation, but it’s a far cry from Pokemon‘s well-established gameplay formula. Instead of gameplay, what Petal Runners has in common with early Pokemon titles is its pixelated world design and love for adventure.

Pokemon Pokopia Is Becoming the Animal Crossing Game Switch 2 Doesn’t Have Yet

Pokopia is giving Switch 2 a cozy experience Animal Crossing fans have been missing, and its growing support could keep filling that gap.

Petal Runner Has the Classic Pokemon Charm and Adventurous Spirit That Makes for a Great Handheld Game

Just watching a few seconds of Petal Runner footage makes it abundantly clear that developer Nano Park Studios has a seriously deep love for classic Pokemon games. The Pokemon titles from the 90s are some of the best Game Boy Color games of all time, and this franchise era helped build up an entire generation of gamers. Petal Runner and Pokemon share very similar world and sound design, but the former has its own special open-world RPG flare. Classic Pokemon is known for its linear design, so Petal Runner is especially exciting for longtime fans who have wanted a game that feels like 90s Pokemon in an open-world setting.

Petal Runner‘s main premise revolves around protagonist Cali and their first-gen digital pet Kira. The two live in a vibrant solarpunk city called Sapphire Valley, with Cali working as the titular “Petal Runner.” In Petal Runner, Cali wants to be the best motorcycle courier that Sapphire Valley has ever seen, but reaching that goal is far from easy. Cali and Kira must zoom through the city and deliver and install digital pets to Sapphire Valley’s citizens. Petal Runner might not exactly be a game like Pokemon from a gameplay standpoint, but the bond between Cali and Kira is reminiscent of Pokemon Trainers and their beloved creature sidekicks.

What Petal Runners has in common with early Pokemon titles is its pixelated world design and love for adventure.

There have been so many new Switch 2 games confirmed this year that it’s honestly hard to keep track. Nintendo’s console has been on a serious roll as of late, and games like Petal Runner prove that the company has no signs of slowing down. The year isn’t even over yet, and there are already a lot of great-looking games to keep on the radar once 2027 rolls around.

Nintendo’s Ocarina of Time remake is obviously the company’s biggest release of 2026. It has been the only AAA game brave enough to enter GTA 6‘s territory, but Nintendo Indie World has been a great reminder that there are just as many awesome smaller titles on the way that are bound to be great additions to the Switch 2 lineup. Ocarina of Time needs plenty of room to breathe and have its own space in order to avoid overshadowing other Nintendo games, and Petal Runner‘s March launch window puts it in a pretty great spot. By then, a lot of Switcher users will have finished Ocarina of Time and might be on the hunt for another fix that feels like part throwback, part modern game.

The Switch 2 and Petal Runner Feel Made for Each Other

Petal Runner is also coming to PC, but playing the game on the Switch 2 might be the better move for those who really want to feel like they’re playing a classic Pokemon game from an alternate universe. There is one key reason why games like Pokemon and Petal Runner feel best on handheld consoles like the Nintendo Switch 2. These games have a sense of adventure that feels far more immersive when being played on a handheld device.

Even if you’re playing the Switch 2 undocked at home, there is still the freedom to walk around and take the game wherever you desire. Although the classic Pokemon games weren’t open-world RPGs, the excitement of adventure and exploration has always been a core piece of its identity. Petal Runner may not scratch the creature collection itch, but gamers who have been looking for something that feels just as nostalgic as it does fresh will want to keep an eye on this pixelated RPG.
