GTA 6 is taking a different approach to its story, with Rockstar Games exploring what happens when its protagonists want more out of life than money, power, and a successful criminal career. Rockstar is looking beyond those familiar goals with GTA 6 protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, whose relationship and personal ambitions are central to the story. The two are still professional criminals, but there’s more to their motivations than simply making as much money as possible.
Of course, GTA 6 isn’t abandoning the crime-focused gameplay that has defined the franchise for decades. Vice City and the wider state of Leonida will be filled with opportunities to make money, commit robberies, and get into trouble with the law. However, Jason and Lucia aren’t necessarily interested in spending the rest of their lives as criminals. They’re looking for a better future, and part of that involves figuring out what they actually want from each other.
GTA 6’s Story is About Quitting Crime, Wanting More From Life
Speaking with Edge Magazine, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson explained that GTA 6 isn’t simply about living out a criminal power fantasy. Instead, Rockstar wants players to consider what Jason and Lucia actually want from life, with their relationship choices in GTA 6 playing a major role in the experience. The couple begins the story hoping to give things another chance, but there’s no guarantee that everything will work out. Nelson explained:
“These games, maybe some people think, ‘Oh, they’re power fantasies.’ Sure. But what if these characters want something else?…We start them wanting to be together and wanting to give this relationship of theirs another shot, but as the game progresses, it’s yours to keep or yours to lose.”

The comments offer a better idea of what Rockstar is trying to accomplish with GTA 6’s story. Jason and Lucia will still be able to pursue money, expensive cars, and the other luxuries associated with the franchise, but those things aren’t necessarily what will make them happy. As such, their relationship is one of the main driving forces behind the narrative, with the possibility of leaving their criminal lives behind becoming an important theme. Players will have some influence over whether Jason and Lucia stay together romantically or settle as more platonic partners-in-crime.
Rockstar has already revealed several ways players can spend time with Jason and Lucia out in GTA 6‘s open world, including dates, kayaking, beach walks, and other activities scattered throughout Leonida. The couple can also communicate through text messages and interact with each other while exploring the world. However, those smaller interactions appear to be part of a much bigger picture, with Rockstar attempting to make their relationship feel like something players are actually responsible for maintaining. The studio has also confirmed that criminal behavior will influence the story through GTA 6‘s new Criminal Profile system, although it’s unclear whether that will directly affect the couple’s relationship.
There’s still plenty we don’t know about GTA 6’s story, particularly when it comes to how much freedom players will have over Jason and Lucia’s future. Jason and Lucia are trying to build a better life together, and whether they actually manage to do so could be one of the most important parts of GTA 6’s story.
