Leon Kennedy’s horrifying journey through a small Spanish village ravaged by Las Plagas and Los Iluminados cultists to save Ashley Graham in Resident Evil 4 can now be experienced with two players at once. Resident Evil 4‘s recent multiplayer mod gives the game two-player co-op, putting a new twist on the iconic action-horror experience 21 years after its original release. Although the Resident Evil 4 remake is the definitive way to experience the story, fans of the original game have a better reason than ever to revisit it.
Resident Evil 4 is still often cited as one of the best games of all time, despite releasing back in 2005. Although RE4 debuted as a GameCube exclusive, it has been ported to nearly every console and PC in the time since its release as its popularity pushed the franchise into what it’s become today. Even after 21 years, Resident Evil 4 fans are still creating new experiences within Capcom’s horror masterpiece thanks to mods.
Resident Evil 4 Gets Co-Op Mod 21 Years Later
The Resident Evil 4 Multiplayer Co-Op Mod from developer Darksoul309222 is now officially available for download via Nexus Mods. Released back on October 13, this Resident Evil 4 mod lets two players share the same instance of the game’s world and work together to fight back the Las Plagas-infected villagers of RE4. As such, the mod doesn’t offer split-screen co-op, but is compatible with most other RE4 mods, as long as they are running version 1.1.0 on PC without modifying the .exe file. More mod compatibility is planned to be added in future updates.
Drag weapons to fill the grid
Co-op wouldn’t officially be introduced to the Resident Evil franchise until Resident Evil 5, where players take on the roles of Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar. However, the roots of RE5‘s action-horror gameplay come from its predecessor, so it was only a matter of time before modders retroactively added co-op to Resident Evil 4. Other Resident Evil games with official co-op campaigns include Resident Evil 6, Resident Evil Revelations 2, and spin-offs like Umbrella Chronicles, Darkside Chronicles, and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.
One of the downsides of the Resident Evil 4 co-op mod is that both players will have to play as Leon, meaning there aren’t any fun alternate playable characters like Ada or Ashley available for player 2 to use. Also, as legendary as the original Resident Evil 4 is, fans hoping to experience the modern remake in co-op have the option to use the Resident Evil 4 Remake Multiplayer Mod, which offers a similar co-op experience.
More official Resident Evil 4 content is on the horizon as well, including a $1,699.99 Leon Kennedy diorama coming later this year. Beyond 2026, the broader Resident Evil franchise is in for some exciting releases as well, with Resident Evil Veronica confirmed and Resident Evil Requiem DLC leaked for a future date. In the meantime, old-school Resident Evil fans can boot up Resident Evil 4 and jump in with a friend using this new co-op multiplayer mod.
