CD Projekt Red Responds to Cyberpunk 2077 December 2025 Update Rumors

A new Cyberpunk 2077 developer statement has confirmed that the game won’t receive a new fifth-anniversary update later this month. Before too much hype gathers ahead of Cyberpunk 2077‘s December 10 anniversary, one CD Projekt RED developer has gotten ahead of the curve to warn fans and avoid disappointment on the day.

It’s difficult to describe Cyberpunk 2077‘s initial launch in 2020 as anything other than a disaster. The game was plagued by bugs and was borderline unplayable on last-gen consoles due to its poor performance. But underneath it all was a potentially excellent role-playing game, which CD Projekt RED has spent years improving and bringing up to the developer’s expected standards. Cyberpunk 2077‘s reputation has largely recovered at this point, and fans were gearing up to celebrate its fifth anniversary on December 10. The studio even teased Cyberpunk 2077 fans with a cryptic message, leading some to believe they were getting a new update for the game this month. Considering CD Projekt RED has continued releasing significant Cyberpunk 2077 updates throughout 2025, it wasn’t exactly an unfair conclusion to arrive at.

Cyberpunk 2077: Project Orion’s Biggest Story Question Sticks Out Like a Sore Thumb

Project Orion is shrouded in mystery, and one part of the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel will be especially illuminating, whenever it’s revealed.

Cyberpunk 2077 Isn’t Getting a Fifth Anniversary Update After All

Over on X, CD Projekt RED Global Community Director Marcin Momot released a statement regarding the possibility of a new Cyberpunk 2077 update, seemingly ruling it out. In his post, he clarified that “we really appreciate everyone’s excitement around the game but we do not plan on releasing an update in December.” As far as responses go, that feels pretty clear-cut that gamers should not expect a game update on December 10. The developer may still celebrate Cyberpunk 2077‘s fifth anniversary in another way on the day – it just won’t come in the form of new content. Perhaps it could be a celebration of how far the game has come during that time, especially on such a significant milestone.

While the news will be disappointing for some gamers, it makes sense for Momot to get ahead of the curve and address this before the hype gets out of hand. CD Projekt RED’s teaser was particularly cryptic, and fans can’t really be blamed for letting their imaginations run wild and envision some fresh new content. But allowing fans to get ahead of themselves only to face disappointment on December 10 would feel unnecessary, especially with all the goodwill that Cyberpunk 2077 has garnered since its rough release.

In response to Momot’s comments, some fans joked that his statement is actually because an update is planned for January instead. Again, that feels unlikely, but never say never, especially with Cyberpunk 2077, a game that has been “finished” numerous times before the developer returned with what is touted as the final update. Perhaps the game does have another big update left in it, but one thing is for sure: it’s not coming on December 10.

Although Virtuos has helped with recent Cyberpunk 2077 updates, CD Projekt RED has plenty in the works to take up its resources. The developer is currently working on Cyberpunk 2 and The Witcher 4 simultaneously, the latter of which is expected to launch first. However, neither game is far in development at the moment, so gamers shouldn’t expect to see a new title from CD Projekt RED for some time yet. With Cyberpunk 2, the developer will want to avoid a repeat of the original game’s launch, and if that means taking more time to nail it on the first attempt, so be it. No one enjoys long wait times for new games, but in practice, gamers tend to hate broken launches a lot more. And given the obvious potential of Cyberpunk 2 based on the original, it’s best if the developer provides it all the time it needs.
