Battlefield 6 Fans Think Upcoming Changes To One Game Mode Seriously Miss the Mark

Battlefield 6‘s 1.1.3.0 update is set to drop on December 9, and gamers have been left extremely frustrated by some upcoming changes to the Breakthrough game mode. Players are worried that the defending side will be pretty miserable in Battlefield 6 Breakthrough matches, with some changes that benefit the attackers in a big way.

The Breakthrough game mode is very simple. There are two teams: Attackers and Defenders. Attackers have a limited number of tickets (lives) to push through and capture the Defenders’ zones. There can be numerous capture points in each zone, and Defenders are pushed further back every time the Attackers take a zone. But in the patch notes for Battlefield 6‘s 1.1.3.0 update arriving on December 9, developer Battlefield Studios adjusted the vehicle count in Breakthrough for most maps. These changes saw Defenders lose vehicle spawns across various zones, while Attackers gained them. In practice, this will fundamentally shift the balance of every Breakthrough map in favor of the Attackers, in some cases quite heavily.

The Battlefield Labs Program Is Making a Comeback

Battlefield 6 developer DICE confirms the return of Battlefield Labs and reveals when players can jump in and what the next test will include.

Battlefield 6’s Breakthrough Balance Solution Hasn’t Gone Down Well

In the official Reddit thread announcing the Battlefield 6 Breakthrough changes, many of the comments were extremely unhappy with the solution. One player described them as “absolutely insane,” claiming that playing defense is “going to be even more of a slog now.” As they point out, it has the potential to result in “insane win rates” for Attackers going forward. Another gamer went as far as to say they’d “probably just want to quit out” if they ended up starting a Breakthrough game as a Defender, as the changes now seem to lean towards an inevitable Attacker win. This may not be how it plays out in practice, but players will need to see it before they really believe that these solutions are the right ones. Right now, though, the proposed changes seem to have missed the mark with the community.

Battlefield Studios has already acknowledged player feedback ahead of the update. The developer jumped in to say that the changes “are aimed at balancing the win rates between Attackers and Defenders we’re seeing internally,” indicating that Attackers are broadly finding it too difficult to win in Breakthrough at the moment, despite players’ anecdotal experiences. It does say that the plan is to “continue making adjustments to Breakthrough based on the player experience and feedback to get each sector closer to feeling challenging, rewarding, and doable with the right level of teamwork,” so players should expect further changes based on how this update pans out.

This isn’t the first controversial update to the Breakthrough game mode. Last month, Battlefield Studios changed Breakthrough to 48 maximum players, down from 64. While aimed at making the maps feel bigger, many complained that this only made them feel emptier, a patchwork solution for a big problem with the game. As a live-service game, some missteps with game balance are unfortunately inevitable, and the only hope is that Battlefield Studios can eventually strike the right balance while players are interested in the game.

Battlefield 6‘s Winter Offensive update on December 9 will bring Season 1 of the game’s live-service offerings to a close. Battlefield Studios has yet to reveal Season 2, although it’s a safe bet to assume that it won’t be too much longer after Season 1 for the next content drop. There have already been a bunch of Battlefield 6 Season 2 leaks, so there’s at least some idea of what players can expect from upcoming content. It’s worth remembering that plans can change during development, so there’s no guarantee that leaked content will actually make it into the final game.
