A 15-Year-Old Open World Game With 95 on Metacritic is Once Again at the Top of the PlayStation and Xbox Charts

Despite being over 15 years old, the original Red Dead Redemption has once again made its way to the top of the console gaming charts, ranking among the most played and best-selling titles on both PlayStation and Xbox. Red Dead Redemption has long been praised as one of the greatest stories ever told, so it should come as no surprise that the game remains incredibly popular years after its debut.

Players were first introduced to the story of John Marston when the original Red Dead Redemption launched in May 2010. The beloved RPG sees gaming fans taking on the role of the former outlaw Marston to hunt down a gang of criminals across the American West and Mexico on a journey that reveals the true lawlessness and chaos of the aptly named Wild West at the turn of the 20th century. Widely considered to be one of the best RPGs of all time, Red Dead Redemption‘s popularity has once again carried it to the top of the charts, proving that an evergreen gaming experience can draw in both veteran and first-time fans long after release.

Surprise Red Dead Redemption Update Hints at a Potential Launch On New Platforms

The first Red Dead Redemption has just received an ESRB update, and it suggests that the game could be heading to a new set of platforms.

Red Dead Redemption Ranks Among Top Sellers on PS and Xbox

According to data from both PS Time Tracker and Microsoft’s Xbox game charts, Red Dead Redemption sits among the most-played and downloaded titles for both PlayStation and Xbox consoles. PlayStation added the PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption on PS Plus Extra and Premium as a free game for the month of December 2025, which no doubt helped in raising the game up the player charts. Xbox has offered a bundled version of both Red Dead Redemption and its sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, for $99.99 during the holiday season, making for a worthwhile pick-up for fans who have been interested in checking out the award-winning titles and, once again, pushing Red Dead Redemption to the top of the charts.

Sales and free offers aside, the sheer legacy of Red Dead Redemption remains well-known among gaming audiences, and the Western’s ability to climb up the most-played rankings even 15 years after its original release remains a testament to the impact of the story of John Marston. That said, recent rumors about Red Dead Redemption news teased by Marston’s voice actor, Rob Wietoff, and Arthur Morgan performer, Roger Clark, have undeniably stirred up renewed interest in the franchise. While those comments remain unclarified, audiences speculate that additional ports of the games to new platforms, including Red Dead Redemption 2 possibly joining its predecessor on the Nintendo Switch, or potential remakes could be on the way, though this remains speculative.

Another big rumor swirling within the RDR community is that a live-action adaptation of Red Dead Redemption could be announced in the future. Gaming companies’ interest in bringing the stories of beloved video games to life on the big screen and in the form of episodic television series has certainly ramped up in recent years, and Red Dead Redemption has more than enough content to make for a compelling drama series or silver-screen blockbuster. As it stands, no official announcements have been made by the game’s developer, Rockstar, or any entertainment production studios, but audiences are keeping their fingers crossed that Red Dead Redemption will eventually make the big leap to Hollywood.

Whether Red Dead Redemption or its successor will find a new home on additional gaming platforms or in other corners of the entertainment industry remains to be seen, but the franchise’s ability to repeatedly find itself ranking above newer releases and other heavy-hitters to sit among the most-played games is perhaps reason enough why players keep finding themselves drawn into the tale of John Marston and his Wild West adventure. It is unknown at this time what may truly lie ahead for the series, so interested fans may want to stay tuned for any upcoming news on Red Dead Redemption and the future of the Western franchise.
