Switch 2 Could Be Getting One of the Best Switch Multiplayer Games Soon

The Nintendo Switch 2 could see an enhanced edition of Splatoon 3 in the near future, according to a rumored rating update that was relayed on social media. Despite the rumors, Nintendo has not confirmed if Splatoon 3 will get any dedicated enhancements after its free Switch 2 update patch went live in June.

Since its launch in September 2022, Splatoon 3 has become one of Nintendo’s go-to multiplayer titles, thanks to its dedicated fan base and unique graphical style. Within two years of release, Splatoon 3 sold over 11.9 million units worldwide, making it the best-selling entry in the Splatoon franchise to date. While Splatoon 3 has already held its final Splatfest event, the Grand Festival of September 2024, that has not stopped Nintendo from repeating seasonal events for new players who missed out on them the first time. Despite mainstream support winding down, Splatoon 3 still sees map rotation updates on a consistent basis, along with bug fixes for any issues that come up.

These Were The Best Selling Nintendo Switch eShop Games of 2025

Nintendo officially unveils the top 20 best-selling digital games of 2025 in Japan, showing the biggest winners for both the Switch and Switch 2.

New Splatoon 3 Listing Could Tease Potential Switch 2 Plans

Though rumors about Splatoon 3‘s future should be taken with a fine grain of salt, a ratings update may give fans some reasons to hope for new developments. The Pan European Game Information (PEGI) ratings website updated its Splatoon 3 listing to include the Switch 2 as a console that the game is available on. Currently, Splatoon 3 has a placeholder release date of December 31, 2025, for the Switch 2, along with the original September 9, 2022, release date on the Switch.

Although Splatoon 3 received a free patch in June 2025 to accommodate the launch of the Switch 2, the changes made were mostly on the graphical side. Additionally, Splatoon 3‘s 10.0.0 update made some graphical compromises on the original Switch system to keep the game fair for users on both systems in competitive game modes. It is currently unclear why Splatoon 3 received a PEGI rating update to include the Switch 2, considering that version 10.0.0 was released six months after the listing was updated.

Additionally, a similar listing for Pikmin 3 Deluxe was found earlier in December in PEGI’s database, which saw the Switch 2 added to the list of supported consoles. Ergo, both PEGI updates could lend credence to the notion that Nintendo still has plans to update specific Switch titles to take advantage of the Switch 2’s hardware. Though the Switch 2’s 2026 release calendar is still a work-in-progress, some of the confirmed entries include Nintendo Switch 2 Editions for Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Although Nintendo has not officially stated if Splatoon 3 will receive a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, the Splatoon franchise still has another project in development for fans to keep an eye on.

Splatoon’s Future On The Switch 2 Is Still In Development

Initially revealed at the same time as Splatoon 3′s 10.0.0 update, Splatoon Raiders is a spin-off that will see players control a new character called The Mechanic. The Mechanic will be joined by Deep Cut, the main band of Splatoon 3 and its Splatfest events, on the Sphiralite Islands. While further details about Splatoon Raiders, including its genre and release window, remain elusive, it is anyone’s guess when Nintendo will divulge more information about the upcoming project.

However, fans looking to get a Switch 2 to enjoy any upcoming titles that Nintendo has planned for 2026 and beyond should act quickly. With the ongoing DRAM shortage crisis causing prices on RAM kits and solid-state drives (SSDs) to skyrocket across the board, the Switch 2 and other current-gen targets will likely be faced with price increases throughout 2026. While Nintendo has not stated if or when the Switch 2 will see a price change, time will tell what choices the gaming giant will make.
