You Can Break All the Rules in This New Mario Tennis Game

Mario Tennis Fever has officially revealed one of the main game mechanics in the newest entry in the franchise, with players able to manipulate their opponent’s court. The long-running Mario sports franchise has been a mainstay of Nintendo’s first-party sports games since the first Mario Tennis launched on the Virtual Boy in 1995. Development on the Mario Tennis franchise has been led by Camelot, who also created the Mario Golf series, and the spinoff has appeared on every major Nintendo console since its debut. Now, Mario Tennis Fever is set to change up the game with its jump to Switch 2.

Nintendo officially announced the newest Mario Tennis game during the September 2025 Nintendo Direct presentation. Mario Tennis Fever was one of several titles revealed as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations for the Mario franchise, with 38 different characters confirmed to be appearing on the roster. Nintendo teased a new story mode coming with Mario Tennis Fever, alongside the “Fever Rackets” as the game’s main mechanic with 30 different special rackets to collect. Now, Nintendo and Camelot are sharing more details about the different types of Fever Rackets featured in Mario Tennis Fever.

8 Best Mario Games To Play On Switch 2, Ranked

The Switch 2 is home to a ton of fun and memorable Mario games, including a few that have received significant upgrades.

Mario Tennis Fever Reveals New Fever Rackets

Nintendo’s recent Overview trailer for Mario Tennis Fever shows off some of the different types of Fever Rackets. Court manipulation is one of the biggest focuses of Mario Tennis Fever‘s special rackets, with the Fire Racket creating small pockets of fire and the Ice Racket freezing a portion of the court. Players will be able to spawn enemies as obstacles, with the Pokey Racket creating a Pokey that will trip players colliding with it. The Shadow Racket even allows players to create a double of themselves for a few seconds, putting the user into a 2v1 situation. Mario Tennis Fever is currently scheduled to release on February 12.

Nintendo also shared some more details about how Fever Rackets and Fever Shots will work in Mario Tennis Fever. Players will be able to utilize Fever Shots by returning shots in rallies, building up their Fever meter to be able to use the special shots. The trailer also teases the ability for players returning Fever Shots to capitalize on their effect, potentially taking the opponent’s bonus with a well-placed return shot. Fever Shots will also have an associated HP mechanic, with players taking damage and potentially being temporarily knocked out by the effects of an opponent’s Fever Shot.

Mario Tennis Fever Has Lots in Store for Fans

Alongside the multitude of details about the newest main mechanic in Mario Tennis Fever, Nintendo teased more details about the game’s roster and modes. Mario Tennis Fever will boast plenty of newcomers to the tennis spinoff, with new characters like Goomba, Nabbit, and Baby Waluigi joining the roster. Nintendo teased some of the game modes featured within Mario Tennis Fever as well, including the new Wonder Court Match, heavily inspired by Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Mario Tennis Fever will also boast extensive online gameplay on launch, not only including online lobbies and Ranked matches but even supporting the Switch 2’s GameShare feature.

Mario Tennis Fever-1

Mario Tennis Fever is setting itself up to be an excellent start for the Mario franchise’s sports spinoffs on Switch 2. Mario Tennis Fever will be the first major Mario sports spinoff released on Nintendo’s newest home console, with no official confirmations about future games yet. The Switch 2 does notably already feature some classic Mario sports games through Nintendo Switch Online, including Super Mario Strikers through the Switch 2-exclusive selection of GameCube games. Mario Tennis Fever looks to bring some major twists to the franchise’s classic gameplay, with Fever Rackets set to create some unpredictable and wild matches.
