PS5 Pro Could Be Getting a Big Upgrade Soon

PS5 Pro Could Be Getting a Big Upgrade Soon

The next big upgrade to the PlayStation 5 Pro’s AI upscaling technology could officially be announced soon. Released in late 2024, the PS5 Probecame the most powerful console on the market. However, it struggled to gain traction with an original price of $699.99 despite featuring several enhancements to the base PS5 console’s technical capabilities.

PlayStation later released a revised PS5 Pro model alongside a price increase that brought the console to $749.99. The original update focused on improving the console’s energy consumption and reducing its overall noise. Since then, PS5’s lead system architect, Mark Cerny, has confirmed that the model would receive additional enhancements in 2026. He stated that the upgrades would specifically focus on improving the PS5 Pro’s current upscaling technology and graphical prowess.

PS5 Pro Getting an Upgrade in 2026

The PlayStation 5 Pro is already an incredibly powerful console, but players can expect it to get a major graphical boost in 2026.

PlayStation 5 Pro Rumored to Receive PSSR 2.0 Update

PSSR 2.0, otherwise known as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, is now rumored to be releasing between January and March of this year. The report originates from Gust_FAN, a Twitter user known for sharing PlayStation leaks and deals, who tweeted the dates and several details on what the potential upgrade could include. Most notably, Gust_FAN has previously tweeted accurate leaks about the PS5 slim design and the 2024 PS5 Pro Technical Presentation where the PS5 Pro model was announced.

The current update is said to increase frame rates for games previously stuck at 70–80 FPS, enhance resolutions for classic games, and feature improved debugging tools for game developers. The term “classic games” is assumed to reference the PS4 library, which currently receives select performance and visual enhancements when played on the PS5 Pro. Additionally, the update will implement a new feature that will operate similarly to AMD’s FSR4, which greatly enhances image quality and overall performance. The Twitter post did not mention if the rumored update will come with a PS5 Pro price increase.

If these rumors hold true, PlayStation fans should hear an official announcement from Sony sooner than later. The debate about whether the PS5 Pro is worth the upgrade has remained prominent amongst the console’s player base. This upgrade could help turn those still skeptical around, especially if the PSSR 2.0 is as impactful as AMD’s FSR4. This would help reduce the performance gap between the current PS5 Pro model and modern PCs with the increase in upscaling capabilities.

The current console allows players to target 4K resolution with 60 FPS or opt in for advanced ray-tracing with faster load times. Even with these enhancements, industry analysts have confirmed that the PS5 Pro has fallen behind the PS4 Pro’s sales numbers. To help improve the enhanced console’s sales, PlayStation might be eager to pair the PS5 Pro upgrades alongside its new exclusive Saros, which releases in April. Housemarque has gone on record to confirm its upcoming title will take advantage of the current PS5 Pro model capabilities. However, it is not confirmed if the game will feature ray-tracing support. Fans will have to wait and see if all these rumors come to fruition, but until then, they can look forward to PlayStation’s exclusive lineup, including both Saros and Wolverine, in 2026.
