Magic: the Gathering Has Accidentally Leaked More than 30 TMNT Cards

Magic: the Gathering has unintentionally leaked more than 30 new cards from the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set, mistakenly found in prerelease kits for Lorwyn Eclipsed. The beloved trading card game from Wizards of the Coast has teased some big plans on the horizon, with a multitude of exciting expansions releasing in the near future. Magic: the Gathering kicks off the new year with Lorwyn Eclipsed launching on January 23, with seven different sets planned to debut in 2026. Wizards of the Coast is also going all-in on one of its biggest new initiatives.

2026 is going to be a big year for Universes Beyond expansions in Magic: the Gathering, with four different crossover sets planned to launch. March will welcome the first major collaboration of the year, with Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles receiving a full expansion based on the franchise. Wizards of the Coast will also introduce new Magic: the Gathering sets based on Marvel, The Hobbit, and Star Trek all coming throughout the year, alongside two more in-universe sets in Secrets of Strixhaven and Reality Fracture. Now, fans are getting an unexpected teaser for a new Magic set.

Magic: The Gathering announces its third Fallout crossover to date, arriving in the form of some new Secret Lair specialty drops.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cards Are Showing Up in Magic’s Lorwyn Prerelease Kits

Multiple Magic: the Gathering‘s pre-release kits for Lorwyn Eclipsed have reportedly erroneously included promo cards from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set. More than thirty different cards from Magic‘s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set have been revealed through a multitude of posts by confused fans, with many of the set’s Rare and Mythic cards being spoiled well in advance. Wizards of the Coast has also made an official statement on the pre-release errors, revealing that the TMNT promo inclusions were not intended and giving stores instructions for addressing the mix-ups. Magic: the Gathering‘s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles expansion is currently scheduled to release on March 6.

The litany of leaks from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles expansion includes several interesting cards from the set. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will reportedly feature the return of the “Class” subtype for Enchantment cards, last featured in 2024’s Bloomburrow expansion. One of the leaked cards, “North Wind Avatar,” allows players to add cards to their hand from “outside the game,” a mechanic that is not currently included on any legal card in Magic: the Gathering‘s Standard format. The mechanic is also similar to the “Learn” mechanic used in Magic‘s Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion, which is speculated to potentially be making a return in the upcoming Secrets of Strixhaven.

Major Changes Are Coming to Magic: the Gathering

Magic‘s newest leak controversy comes as Wizards of the Coast is making some big changes to Magic: the Gathering. Wizards of the Coast previously revealed that it will be ending its popular “Buy-A-Box” promotion after Lorwyn Eclipsed, with players no longer receiving special promos for purchasing booster boxes from local game stores. Lorwyn Eclipsed also stands as the first new Standard-legal set since 1997’s Tempest to not include a stamped promo card with its pre-release kits. Pre-release kits now include “traditional foil” cards from the set as the “promo” card within the kit.

The plethora of leaked cards may serve to dampen fan excitement about Magic: the Gathering‘s next big tie-in expansion. Wizards of the Coast first revealed Magic: the Gathering‘s partnership with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in October, showing off a plethora of cards at New York Comic Con. TMNT also notably serves as the second full crossover set to come from Magic: the Gathering‘s collaboration with Nickelodeon, previously releasing the Avatar: the Last Airbender expansion and a trio of SpongeBob SquarePants Secret Lair drops. Only time will tell if Magic: the Gathering‘s huge TMNT leak gets even bigger, with Lorwyn Eclipsed pre-release season kicking into full swing.
