Free-to-Play Steam Game Has Nearly 4,000 DLCs

Free-to-Play Steam Game Has Nearly 4,000 DLCs

A free-to-play game on Steam has almost 4,000 DLC add-ons available for purchase, though it doesn’t expect players to purchase them all. In over 20 years on the market, Steam has been the dominant platform for PC gaming, with more than 100 million active monthly users purchasing and playing games through the service. Distributed by Valve, it hosts a staggering number of available titles, with several thousand games released on the platform every year.

Even amidst competition from a rival storefront in the Epic Games Store, Steam remains increasingly popular among PC audiences as a go-to hub for all things gaming. The platform also regularly discounts games, and its seasonal sales often result in massive backlogs for its users, ensuring they always have something new to play. Steam has also released its own dedicated hardware, the Steam Deck, in 2022, offering gamers the opportunity to take their Steam libraries on the go.

Steam Users Have Until January 22 to Claim 2 Games Completely Free of Charge

Steam users can grab two free games for their libraries, but only until January 22.

Fantasy Grounds VTT Hosts Nearly 4,000 DLCs

On the Steam subreddit, user sidius-king pointed out that the game Fantasy Grounds VTT had 3,705 available DLCs. Sidius-king also pointed out that players can only view 200 of these add-ons on the game’s main page, and cannot add all 3,705 to their carts. With the prices of the first few DLCs listed at $29.99, sidius-king estimated that, were every DLC to cost that much, gamers would have to spend a whopping $124,642.36 to purchase them all.

Reddit commenters, however, note that Fantasy Grounds VTT has a perfectly salient reason to feature so many add-ons in that it’s not really a game. In essence, Fantasy Grounds VTT is a platform that offers users different tabletop RPGs, such as Dungeons and Dragons and Pathfinder, which can be played online. The downloadable content listed on Steam consists of the tabletop games themselves, as well as the handbooks and manuals used to run them.

Fantasy Grounds

Fantasy Ground VTT‘s extensive library of DLC underscores its status as an all-in-one tabletop platform, one where users have the freedom to choose their preferred games without needing to engage with all of them. One commenter likened buying all the DLC for Fantasy Ground VTT to walking into a library and buying every single book. Others point out that Fantasy Grounds VTT is not the only Steam product that works like this, as titles such as Train Simulator and Rocksmith also feature vast DLC libraries, yet don’t expect players to buy every single downloadable option.

Since its launch in 2004, Fantasy Grounds VTT has been praised for its customization features across a variety of tabletop RPGs, and its 2015 Steam release opened the door for a greater playerbase increase. The platform features support for over 50 games and 3,000 products, making it the largest digital lineup of officially licensed content. With a multitude of options available through Steam, fans of tabletop RPGs will find plenty of bang for their buck across this digital platform.
