Forza Horizon 6 Confirms Release Date, But Has Bad News for PS5 Gamers

Forza Horizon 6 launches May 19, Playground Games has confirmed. The release date announcement arrived at the end of a lengthy Xbox Developer Direct segment that served as a preview of the upcoming title, while also revealing one previously unconfirmed detail about the Forza Horizon 6 PlayStation 5 version.

The sixth mainline Forza Horizon game was officially announced in late September. As the first series entry set in Japan, Microsoft opted to announce it during the 2025 edition of the Tokyo Game Show. However, few details were shared at the time; the company released only a brief pre-rendered cinematic featuring a garage, Mount Fuji, and exactly zero cars. The video concluded with a 2026 release window and the promise of more information to follow soon.

Open-World? Racing? Sounds like a match made in heaven.

Forza Horizon 6 First Gameplay and Release Date(s) Revealed

Following up on that announcement, Forza Horizon 6 was featured at the 2026 Xbox Developer Direct, with Playground Games’ preview of its upcoming title opening the January 22 showcase. At the end of the segment that doubled as a gameplay reveal, the UK developer confirmed a release date of May 19. A four-day early access period will also be available, offered as one of the game’s Ultimate Edition perks.

Forza Horizon 6 Release Dates

  • Early access: May 15, 2026

  • Global release: May 19, 2026

    • Xbox Series X/S, PC, Xbox Game Pass (Ultimate and PC tiers)
  • PS5 release: 2026

    • Likely the second half of the year

The next entry in the long-running open-world racing franchise will be a day-one release for the Xbox Series X/S and PC. While it has already been confirmed for Sony’s current-gen console, Forza Horizon 6 will be skipping the PlayStation 5 at launch. Playground Games expanded on this staggered release strategy during its Developer Direct segment, with a company official committing to releasing Forza Horizon 6 before the end of the year. With no more specific window provided, a launch in the second half of 2026 appears more likely than a debut in the first.

Everything We Learned About Forza Horizon 6 During Xbox Developer Direct 2026

Playground Games shared over a dozen previously unknown tidbits about its upcoming title during the January 22 showcase. Among other things, the developer revealed that Forza Horzion 6 will feature the series’ most elaborate driver journey yet, in the sense of players not even starting as professional drivers but mere tourists who get roped into the Horizon life. In other words, the actual process of joining the Horizon Festival will be longer than usual here.

FH6 Will Have the Largest Series Map Yet That Won’t Be Fully Accessible From the Beginning

Triumphing in Horizon Festival qualifiers should double as a microcosm of the core gameplay loop on offer, with Playground revealing Forza Horizon 6 will be structured around progressing through driving ranks by earning wristbands. Unlocking the golden wristband will be a major milestone, granting access to a new area described as an exclusive island reserved for top-tier drivers in the Japanese racing scene. Playground says the upcoming title has the largest map of any Forza Horizon game by a significant margin. Its central city is also confirmed to be the largest urban area the developer has designed to date, estimated to be roughly five times bigger than Guanajuato from FH5.

Forza Horizon 6 Weather Seasons Confirmed

The sixth installment in the series has been confirmed to feature seasonality, with Playground saying the goal of this inclusion was to capture the dramatic visual and atmospheric changes across Japan throughout the year. The Xbox Developer Direct preview included gameplay footage from all four seasons, highlighting—among other things—a map with towering ice walls reminiscent of the iconic Frappe Snowland track from Mario Kart 64. However, the presentation did not clarify how seasonality will function in-game, i.e., whether it will be dynamic, player-controlled, or a combination thereof.

Forza Horizon 6 Will Let Players Decorate an Entire Valley

Apart from racing, Forza Horizon 6 will have the series’ most elaborate decoration mode yet, with an area called The Estate allowing players to adorn a massive valley any way they see fit. The feature draws inspiration from Japan’s growing issue of abandoned rural homes, known as akiya, tasking players with repurposing one such property as a creative space that others can visit. The upcoming title will also expand its event lineup with several new formats, including obstacle course-style Horizon Rush challenges and time attack circuits. The latter can be started directly from the open world, with no loading screens and full support for co-op multiplayer.

Forza Horizon 6 will also include a new Journal system for giving more structure to open world progression, tracking everything from ranking points to optional photos. In-game car meets inspried by the Daikoku culture will also be part of the package, together with even more elaborate customization and collect-a-thon elements. At launch, Forza Horizon 6 will feature around 550 cars, a nearly 40% improvement on what Forza Horizon 5 had. These include the newly confirmed cover vehicles (Toyota’s 2025 GR GT Prototype and 2025 Land Cruiser), with the GR GT Prototype starring in a curated “Initial Experience” prologue featuring off-roading in the Alps and even a race against the Shinkansen.
