Apex Legends For Switch Shutting Down This Year, But Switch 2 Edition Lives On

Developer Respawn Entertainment has announced that it is shutting down the servers for the battle royale game Apex Legends on Nintendo Switch. However, the game will remain playable on Switch 2.

The upcoming Apex Legends Season 29 will be the final update for the game on Switch. Beginning with Season 30 on August 4, 2026, Apex Legends will no longer be playable on the OG Switch.

Until then, people can play normally. Any leftover allotment of in-game currency can be migrated to the Switch 2 version if people opt to keep playing on the new system. Additionally, all gameplay progress is tied to an EA account, so that will migrate to other platforms as well.

“As we continue to evolve Apex Legend’s content and technical foundation, our goal is to deliver a high quality experience. Thanks to Nintendo’s investment in the Nintendo Switch 2, the platform offers a great handheld experience for Apex Legends,” Respawn said. “We are deeply grateful to the Nintendo community that has been with us on this journey since Day 1, and we hope to see you on the Dropship on Nintendo Switch 2.”

The version of Apex Legends on Switch had many issues, with GameSpot’s review calling it a “decent last resort” for people who didn’t have other options for how to play the game.

Apex Legends has been in the news a lot lately, but for reasons not connected to the game itself. Some of the developers who worked on the game split off to start a new studio, Wildlight, which just recently debuted a free-to-play shooter called Highguard. The game’s Steam page originally said Highguard hailed from the creators of Apex Legends and Titanfall, but that line was recently wiped.

Apex Legends originally launched in 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, before coming to Switch in 2021. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions arrived in 2022, while the Switch 2 version landed in August 2025.
