The recent Sony State of Play left gamers with a lot of exciting things to unpack, and one of the biggest surprises of the event was God of War: Sons of Sparta. Not only are God of War fans going to be getting a canon 2D prequel starring a young Kratos, but it was also immediately shadow dropped onto the PS5. God of War: Sons of Sparta was definitely a State of Play highlight, and that wasn’t the only God of War announcement, either.
After tons of rumors and speculation, it’s finally been confirmed that a God of War trilogy remake is in the works. This is huge news for longtime fans of the series. It will be fascinating to see just how developers handle remaking Kratos’ original journey. As thrilling as this news is, there’s one major catch. According to Sony’s official announcement on the PlayStation blog, the trilogy remake is “still very early in development.” This is really surprising, since it’s been rumored for so long. So, even though God of War: Sons of Sparta shadow dropping is awesome, it shouldn’t distract from the strange decision to only be starting development on the remade trilogy now.
The God of War Trilogy Remake Has Been Expected For Years – So Why Wait Until Now?
Since around 2024, there have been several rumors and leaks claiming that a God of War trilogy remake was in development. Of course, all rumors should be taken with a grain of salt. If anything, Sony’s announcement is a good reminder of just how inaccurate some of these leaks and rumors can be. Considering that Sony made sure to emphasize that the remake is “very early” in development, it sounds like the wait for more God of War games is going to be far longer than anticipated.

Sony confirmed that “it will be a while before anything else can be shared,” so there’s no telling when God of War fans will get more news on the trilogy remake. God of War‘s future plans have been one of the biggest mysteries in the industry. A one-two punch of a trilogy remake and God of War: Sons of Sparta is a solid update, but the former is arguably as frustrating as it is promising, since it could mean the wait for Ragnarok‘s sequel may now take longer than expected.
Even though the trilogy remake rumors made it seem like development was further along, it’s possible that these leaks caught wind of Santa Monica Studio’s plans when it was simply in the conceptual phases. There’s no way to know for sure. Regardless, it’s really shocking that the trilogy remake is so early in production after it having been rumored for so long. While it’s obviously great that it’s happening, it’s a bummer that it’s taken so much time to get the ball rolling. An ideal scenario would have seen the Trilogy releasing sooner so that Santa Monica could go all-in on Ragnarok‘s successor, and an announcement like this would have made more sense for the big 20th anniversary last year. Unfortunately, that isn’t what happened.
On the bright side, original Kratos voice actor TC Carson returned to make the announcement. It’s unclear if he will be recording new voice lines for the trilogy remake or simply re-recording existing dialogue.
The Next Mainline God of War Game is Becoming More Mysterious As Time Passes
November 2026 will mark four years since God of War Ragnarok was released. Between God of War‘s first Norse chapter and Ragnarok‘s launch, there were four years. As game development becomes more complicated, it already felt likely that the gap between Ragnarok and its sequel would be larger, especially since the next game will likely need an entirely new setting and technology. Nothing is impossible, but the trilogy remake being this far away has me worried that the wait for the next God of War game will take much longer than initially expected. I’m crossing my fingers that this isn’t the case, but the remake news definitely has me preparing for a painfully long wait.
Rumors About the Next God of War Game
- There are theories that it could take place in Egypt.
- Atreus could take up Kratos’ mantle.
- A split focus could see Kratos rebuilding Greece while Atreus explores a new setting.
Santa Monica Studio has done an incredible job at keeping tight-lipped about what happens to Kratos and Atreus next. A God of War game set in Egypt would definitely be an exciting change of scenery. Ragnarok felt like the end of the Norse saga, but writers could have some surprises in store that keep Kratos in the realm. Kratos and Atreus’ paths are now diverging, so there’s even the chance that the next God of War story could be split between two realms.
In the Meantime, At Least There’s a Cool New God of War Prequel to Dive Into and a Show on the Horizon
God of War: Sons of Sparta isn’t the new chapter that some were expecting, but it’s a fascinating look into Kratos’ younger life. Sony made it clear that it’s unclear when more God of War trilogy remake or mainline news will be ready, but there is at least a fresh game and story to help pass the time.
Amazon’s live-action God of War series is intriguing, but nerve-wracking. Turning video games into live-action shows is no easy feat. There’s also the argument that it’s unnecessary when it comes to heavily narrative-driven games like God of War and The Last of Us. Fallout has proven that a live-action series can work incredibly well, but that’s also because Bethesda’s RPG franchise has the benefit of being focused more on the lore than the actual story. The world itself makes it easier to build a compelling original narrative.
God of War‘s confirmed live-action cast includes Ryan Hurst, Callum Vinson, Alastair Duncan, Mandy Patinkin, Olafur Darri Olafsson, Danny Woodburn, Jeff Gulka, Max Parker, and Teresa Palmer.
Beyond the God of War franchise, Santa Monica Studio’s new IP is still in the works, too. It’s safe to say that the developer has its hands full with projects at the moment. As exciting as that is, it hopefully doesn’t mean that Santa Monica Studio is taking on too much responsibility. Stretching the studio too thin could be incredibly risky. However, Santa Monica Studio’s strong track record is at least a good sign that the company knows what it’s doing. Right now, all God of War fans can do at the moment is check out God of War: Sons of Sparta and wait to see what Sony and Santa Monica Studio announce next.
