Pokemon GO Confirms Big Mega Evolution Changes Coming Soon

Pokemon GO Confirms Big Mega Evolution Changes Coming Soon

Pokemon GO has confirmed the upcoming addition of Super Mega Raids, which will allow players to go after even more powerful Mega Evolved Pokemon, and a new power level called Super Max. Raiding parties in Pokemon GO will be able to take part in Super Mega Raids at the start of the Pokemon GO Tour: Kalos event, which launches worldwide between February 28 and March 1.

Mega Evolution in Pokemon GO works in much the same way as it does in other Pokemon games, allowing a select number of Pokemon to temporarily transform into much more powerful forms. Although raids against Mega Evolved Pokemon have been around for a few years, developer Scopely has announced a new type of raid that will unlock a greater level of power than the game has ever seen before.

Pokemon GO Reveals Super Max Level and Super Mega Raids

The coming changes will allow players to power up their Mega Evolved Pokemon to a heightened state called Super Max Level, which goes beyond the current three-tiered Mega Evolution system in Pokemon GO. As revealed by the developer, the Super Max state will grant Pokemon bonuses that include greatly increased CP, as well as higher Catch Candy, Catch XP, and Candy XL rates when catching Pokemon that share their type, and the cooldown for Mega Evolving them again will be reduced to 24 hours. Pokemon eligible for achieving this new power level must already have reached the third Mega Evolution tier, and players will need to spend that specific Pokemon’s Mega Energy in order to unlock its Super Max potential.

The special event will also open up new Super Mega Raids for the first time, allowing players to take on Pokemon like Mega Victreebel and Mega Malamar, both of which will be eligible for Super Max Level after players capture them. Scopely recommends that teams taking on these raids be composed of a minimum of eight players, all of whom are bringing at least one Mega Evolved Pokemon to the fight. Opposing Pokemon in Super Mega Raids will be able to enter an enraged mode, during which they will put up damage-reduction shields, and each player will only be able to break one shield per raid. Once a shield goes up, one Pokemon capable of Mega Evolution in the party will be pulled out if none are currently active, and its first attack will receive a significant power boost, allowing for easy breaking of the shield. All players will be able to encounter a Mega Evolution-capable Beedrill during the event and will receive enough Mega Energy to evolve it.

Players will be able to find Super Mega Raids at Gyms and Power Spots, and Scopely will be launching a special web-based map to make it easier for players to locate them. This map will be equipped with special filters that allow players to refine their searches, showing different types of events and event days in Pokemon GO, and it promises to have easy features for sharing links with friends, allowing for easy meet-ups.

Pokemon GO’s Super Mega Raids Will Use a New Currency

The official announcement also confirms rumors of a new Pokemon GO currency called Link Charges, which users can spend to participate in Super Mega Raids, though it won’t be used in other Mega Raids. Players can get Link Charges in a number of different ways, which include receiving them from Gifts, completing weekly challenges, collecting them from some official community meetups in Campfire, and purchasing them from the in-game shop or Pokemon GO Web Store. Players will only be able to hold a limited number of Link Charges at a time, but they won’t take up space in the main inventory, being stored in the Link Holder, a special item that players will automatically receive when they pick up the first Link Charges.

The report also confirms a recent leak that has upset some fans, as they believe it will make Pokemon GO harder for remote players. According to the official website, players showing up to Super Mega Raids in person will be able to choose between spending a Premium Battle Pass or an unspecified amount of Link Charges as an entry fee, while remote players will need to spend both a Remote Raid Pass and Link Charges. The recent leak stated that the amount of Link Charges required for both types of players would be 200, but Scopely has not confirmed that number, nor has it stated how many Link Charges players will be able to store at any given time. Whatever the normal amount is, players will be able to receive a boosted number of Link Charges during the Pokemon GO Tour: Kalos event, and the storage limit will be relaxed during that timeframe, though both will be reduced once the event ends.
