LEGO Ideas SpongeBob Build is Incredible and I Need It to Get an Official Release

One LEGO fan has created an incredibly detailed SpongeBob SquarePants model for LEGO Ideas, and many fans think it has a good chance of being approved. Thanks to the Ideas program, talented LEGO builders have the chance to get their creations considered for production as official sets if they earn 10,000 votes from the community.

As one of the most popular cartoons of all time, SpongeBob Square Pants has unsurprisingly been featured in all sorts of merchandise, including official LEGO sets. From 2006 through 2012, Nickelodeon partnered with the LEGO Group to release products based on Bikini Bottom and its aquatic denizens. There are sets featuring the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob’s Pineapple, and even The Chum Bucket for fans to collect. While new official sets based on the franchise are currently not in production, some LEGO builders have made their own custom creations and shared them with the community.

LEGO Ideas SpongeBob SquarePants Model Concept

One of these builders is vixtop, and they recently shared their LEGO Ideas build with the community. Officially called “SpongeBob SquarePants – Display Model,” the design perfectly captured the enthusiasm of the character and nailed his iconic shape. Among the highlights, the LEGO fan used a wide selection of bricks to create the undersea character’s buck-tooth smile and big eyes. They also gave SpongeBob his iconic square pants, along with his striped socks and black shoes. Beyond replicating the design of the character, vixtop included several add-ons. Specifically, the proposed set included a Krusty Krab cooking cap, Krabby Patty, and a spatula. Furthermore, an alt arm could be attached for holding the cooking utensil.

It is worth noting that this SpongeBob build is only a concept at this point, with vixtop sharing a render of the design. Nonetheless, this digital mock-up provided an excellent look at the potential model, which uses 1,221 pieces, when including accessories. According to the description on LEGO Ideas, the “SpongeBob SquarePants – Display Model” is roughly 10.2 inches tall. However, it stands at 15.8 inches when including the hat. The project has already earned over 2,100 supporters, with many fans seeing the potential in the design. Anyone interested in supporting the project can do so by going to vixtop’s LEGO Ideas page for the model. There, the builder provides additional background on the design, including the challenge of adapting SpongeBob SquarePants’ 2D look to LEGO form.

Besides already gaining thousands of supporters on LEGO Ideas, the “SpongeBob SquarePants – Display Model” has earned overwhelming praise on Reddit. So far, the post has over 9.5K upvotes, with many users leaving their thoughts in the comments. In particular, fans highlighted how the concept was reminiscent of the Build-A-Bob set from 2006. However, their custom design featured more detail, making it look more similar to the character’s appearance in the official cartoon. In the comments section, vixtop also said they were trying to purchase all the necessary bricks so they could attempt building the design in real life.

Thanks to the LEGO Ideas program, ingenious builders, like vixtop, have the opportunity to get their work recognized and make some money along the way. For instance, another fan recently created a “working” toaster for LEGO Ideas. The clever design simulated the process of toasting bread, earning an award at Atlanta BrickCon.

More Official LEGO Products Are Coming Soon

It will be interesting to see what other LEGO Ideas sets appear in the weeks ahead as creative builders continue to come up with unique concepts. However, there are many official sets already coming in 2026. Notably, Pokemon-themed LEGO sets are releasing on February 27, while products based on Star Wars, Batman, and more are coming in March. While LEGO fans will have to wait and see if SpongeBob SquarePants ever gets another official product release, there will be lots of other sets to keep them busy.
