If you’re looking to breeze through Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, having the right team is key to success, and I have the perfect one for you. With the right balance of offense, defense, and utility, your Pokemon squad can tackle any challenge that comes your way — from the first gym to the Elite Four in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. The team I’m about to suggest has great type coverage and strategic moves to create a well-rounded, unstoppable force to conquer the Kanto region before you acquire the National Dex.
Say Goodbye to These 46 Pokemon in FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch
Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch and Switch 2 will force you to say goodbye to 46 Pokemon that you won’t be able to get.
Blastoise: A Starter Pokemon With Serious Staying Power
Blastoise is arguably the best starter in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. It shines in the early game, especially with its versatility and solid typing. One of the biggest benefits of starting with Squirtle is its ability to learn moves like Dig as early as Route 8, which is perfect for taking down Lt. Surge’s Electric-type team.

As you progress, Blastoise’s ability to learn Bite also provides great coverage against Sabrina’s Psychic-type Pokemon, which are particularly frail against physical attacks. Blastoise is a reliable tank, thanks to its high defensive stats, and it can handle most threats while dealing good damage. Surf, which it learns naturally, is one of the best Water-type moves in the game and a staple in Blastoise’s offensive arsenal.
How to get Blastoise early in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen:
- Evolve Squirtle into Wartortle at level 16, then into Blastoise at level 36.
Snorlax: The Bulky Attacker You May Never Have to Box
Snorlax is a powerhouse in both terms of bulk and offensive output. You can find yours on Route 12 after you use the Poke Flute to wake it up. At level 30, Snorlax comes with useful moves like Headbutt, Yawn, Rest, and Snore. When it hits level 33, it gains access to Body Slam, a move that can paralyze opponents, adding extra utility to its arsenal.
The real charm of Snorlax lies in its Thick Fat ability, which halves the damage from Fire- and Ice-type attacks. This makes it a durable wall that can shrug off even the most powerful hits. It also works as an amazing offensive threat thanks to moves like Hyper Beam (if you’re willing to let the recharge slide) and Body Slam, while also doing good damage with Shadow Ball.
How to get Snorlax early in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen:
- Snorlax is first encountered on Route 12 after getting the Poke Flute from Pokemon Tower.
Arcanine: Almost a Legendary With The Best Ability in the Game
Arcanine is a formidable Fire-type with stats that are so high it almost sounds like a Legendary Pokemon in FireRed and LeafGreen. It has a BST (base stat total) of 555, and it has access to Intimidate as an ability, which lowers opponents’ Attack to reduce incoming damage. You can also pivot into Arcanine specifically for Intimidate, and its offensive capabilities make it useful in many other matchups.
Arcanine’s move pool is diverse and includes Flamethrower, Extreme Speed, and Bite. This gives it great coverage for various threats, though keep in mind it struggles against Ground-types. However, for Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen‘s Giovanni, you can simply use Blastoise.
How to get Arcanine early in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen:
- Growlithe, which evolves into Arcanine, is available early on Route 7 and Route 8.
- Use a Fire Stone to evolve Growlithe into Arcanine once you reach Celadon City’s Mall.
If you have Pokemon LeafGreen, as I do, then you can swap Arcanine for Ninetales. The process is very similar for moves and evolution, and while Arcanine is better overall thanks to Intimidate and higher stats, Ninetales is the next best thing.
Jynx: The Ultimate Control Specialist With Great Coverage
Jynx is one of the best special attackers in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, with its unique dual typing of Psychic and Ice. It excels in controlling the pace of battle by putting foes to sleep with its Lovely Kiss move. With a 75% accuracy rate for sleep, Jynx can shut down opponents, setting them up for an easy knockout. Additionally, Ice Beam and Psychic are two of the most reliable STAB moves in the game, giving Jynx great offensive coverage.
Jynx is also a great pick for both Lorelei and Sabrina due to its Ice and Psychic typing, but it’s quite frail, so you’ll need to rely on its ability to disrupt enemies before they can strike back. To get Jynx early, simply fish for Poliwhirl using the Super Rod and then trade it at Cerulean City.
How to get Jynx early in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen:
- After defeating Team Rocket in Celadon City and going through Lavender Town, obtain the Super Rod from the NPC on Route 12.
- Use the Super Rod to fish for Poliwhirl on Route 6.
- Trade Poliwhirl for Jynx at the Cerulean City near the Pokemon Center.
Nidoking: The Early-to-Late Game Powerhouse
Nidoking is one of the most powerful Pokemon in FireRed and LeafGreen. You can catch Nidoran very early on in Route 3, and if you evolve it into Nidoking, it will have access to a wide range of moves. Notably, Nidoking can learn Earthquake, Toxic, and Rock Slide, making it an extremely effective offensive powerhouse. Earthquake is its most powerful attack, capable of sweeping through many foes.
Since you get Nidoran so early, Nidoking becomes an excellent option against Gym Leaders like Koga and Blaine, while still being useful against Erika early on and the Elite Four later in the game. It’s worth noting that it learns Earthquake a bit later, but it’s such a strong move that it doesn’t really matter.
How to get Nidoking early in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen:
- Find a male Nidoran on Route 3 (usually at level 6).
- Evolve Nidoran into Nidorino at level 16, then use a Moon Stone to evolve it into Nidoking.
Nidoran male only has a 1% chance to appear in Pokemon LeafGreen on Route 3, as opposed to 14% in FireRed.
Raichu: The Speedy Threat With Access to Thunderbolt
Raichu is one of the most reliable Electric-types in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. While Raichu isn’t as bulky as some other Pokemon, its speed and access to powerful Electric-type moves like Thunderbolt and Thunder make it a fantastic offensive option. With its high Speed stat, Raichu can hit fast and hard, making it a great choice for taking down Water-types and Flying-types, which are common throughout the game.
Additionally, Raichu has access to several utility moves like Quick Attack, Iron Tail, and Surf (in certain versions), giving it a versatile role on your team. It’s a reliable option against Lorelei’s Ice-types, Misty’s Water-types, and even Giovanni’s Water-weak Ground-types. Thief can also be an amazing move to use on Raichu, which is overall better than Jolteon because it learns Thunderbolt via leveling.
How to get Raichu early in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen:
There are options if you really want to pick Bulbasaur or Charmander, in which case I would recommend Dodrio in place of Raichu for the former and Vaporeon in place of Arcanine for the latter. This is not necessarily optimal, but it’s a very good setup.
