Final Fantasy 7 Remake Director Teases New Details About Part 3

It feels like Square Enix is building up to reveal Final Fantasy Remake Part 3 any day now. Director Naoki Hamaguchi keeps saying the game is playable and he already knows the title, with the first trailer expected sooner rather than later. As for what the final part of the remake trilogy will cover, cut, or reinvent from the original, Hamaguchi shared new details teasing airships and possibly underwater exploration.

Speaking with Bloomberg, the Square Enix developer got into the nitty-gritty of what long-time Final Fantasy VII fans can expect from the upcoming sequel. As context, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth jumbled some important story beats around. For example, players meet Cid Highwind without ever visiting Rocket Town, skipping over an integral part of the story. Wutai, an optional area in the original, was also missing.

Hamaguchi confirmed both are present in Part 3. “Yeah, this is one of the elements we had to switch around with Rebirth,” he said regarding Rocket Town. Wutai too. “It’s one of the main locations. Yuffie’s made a very prominent appearance, stating her case about her homeland,” he added. “So if Wutai’s not featured, I think the fans are going to yell at me.”

Then there are some of the most beloved and infamous parts of Final Fantasy VII‘s end-game. One is using the Highwind airship to travel around the world map at will. The other is an RNG-based Chocobo breeding mini-game that tested the patience of even the most diehard fans.

Hamaguchi was more cryptic about these elements. “Flying the Highwind is a very large part of the third installment,” he said, adding that they want to “expand” on the experience for the remake. “I can’t say yay or nay on the actual breeding,” he continued. ” But there is an element in the third installment involving Chocobos that is a little different than Rebirth.”

The director was even more tight-lipped about whether players will go to space and explore underwater for the Huge Materia missions. As for the Great Glacier, a massive expanse players traverse over by snowboarding, Hamaguchi reiterated that that’s where the third game is likely to begin.

Hopefully we won’t have to wait long to get our first peek at it. My money’s on an announcement during a May PlayStation showcase or Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest Live event. Either way, we’ll probably know a lot more about Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 by the end of 2026. Unlike the first two parts, it’s already confirmed to be coming to Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S day-and-date with the PS5 version.
