Pokemon Pokopia has finally arrived on Nintendo Switch 2, and to commemorate its launch, Pokemon Go is holding a special crossover celebration until March 16. All throughout the event, Pokemon featured in the Switch 2 game will be appearing more frequently in Go, including its main star: Ditto.
For a limited time, a special hat-wearing variant of the shapeshifting Pokemon will be available in the wild and as a Research reward. Encountering one won’t be so straightforward, however, as Ditto will be disguised as new Pokemon during the event. To help you get one, we’ve put together this guide on how to catch Ditto and what Pokemon it could be disguised as.
How To Catch Ditto
There are several ways to find Ditto during the Pokopia Celebration event, but they’ll require some patience.
The first way is by encountering one in the wild. Ditto will spawn on the overworld map throughout the event, but as usual, it will be disguised as different Pokemon. That means you won’t know whether or not you’ve found one until after you’ve caught it. Moreover, the Pokemon Ditto may be disguised as are different from usual, but with a little persistence, you’ll eventually catch one.
The other way to encounter Ditto is by completing this event’s two Collection Challenges. You’ll also have a chance to catch Ditto after completing the following Timed Research tasks:
- Catch 75 Pokemon
- Explore 3 km
Both the Timed Research and the Collection Challenges will only be available until the event ends on March 16, so you have until then to complete the tasks and earn the Ditto encounters.

What Pokemon Can Ditto Be?
As mentioned, Ditto likes to take on the guise of other Pokemon when it spawns in the wild, so you initially can’t tell when you’ve encountered one. Only after catching one will it transform back into its regular form, so you’ll need to catch lots of Pokemon if you hope to get one.
Ditto can be masquerading as pretty much any of this event’s featured Pokemon, so there are plenty of chances to find one. Here’s the full list of Pokemon that Ditto can be disguised as:
- Bulbasaur
- Charmander
- Squirtle
- Pikachu
- Hitmonchan
- Scyther
- Marill
- Combee
- Drillbur
- Timburr
- Goomy
Can Ditto Be Shiny?
Not only will the Ditto you encounter during the event be wearing a Pokopia-inspired hat or cap, but there’s also a chance it can be shiny. Shiny Ditto is blue rather than purple, so it’s easy to tell if you’ve found one.
Keep in mind that while Ditto may be shiny, the Pokemon it’s disguised as will not; this means that if you encounter, say, a shiny Pikachu during the event, it’s guaranteed not to be a Ditto. There’s also a chance that the Ditto you catch will have a special Pokopia-themed background on its lookup screen.
Pokemon Go’s Pokopia Celebration ends on March 16, but there are a few other events lined up this month, including a Gigantamax Pikachu Max Battle Day. Be sure to check out our roundup for more details on all the biggest Pokemon Go events of March.
