Thousands of Call of Duty Fans Are Getting Sick of Shipment and Nuketown

Call of Duty fans online are calling for series staple maps Nuketown and Shipment to take a significant break, after appearing in multiple games in recent years. As two of the smallest maps in the Call of Duty series, both Nuketown and Shipment are always among the more popular maps whenever they appear, but many fans are sick of the sight of them at this point.

Shipment made its debut in 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, making it almost two decades old. It didn’t reappear until 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot, as well as its sequels in 2022 and 2023 respectively. Comparatively, Nuketown has appeared much more regularly. A variant of the small map has been included in every single Call of Duty: Black Ops title, from the 2010 original to last year’s Black Ops 7. There’s no denying that they’re both incredibly iconic maps, but that doesn’t mean that players want to see them appear over and over again.

Raven Software, developer of Call of Duty: Warzone, explains why the shooter’s new Black Ops Royale game mode doesn’t have a Solos option.

Call of Duty Fans Want Shipment and Nuketown to Take a Break

A recent Reddit thread started by user Lumenprotoplasma raised the fact that Nuketown and Shipment continuously appear in Call of Duty games, suggest that “we need at least 10 years without these maps.” The thread, which has since been upvoted over 2,200 times by fans, saw users engage in discussions from both angles about the benefits and drawbacks of bringing both maps back to the table time and time again. Some felt that both were undeniably iconic Call of Duty maps, and shouldn’t disappear for that reason alone. Others raised the fact that some players just don’t want change, pointing to maps like Mirage and Dust2 in Counter-Strike, which have been played for decades at this point. However, others lamented the fact that it can be difficult to get players to try other maps, as long as Nuketown and Shipment are in rotation. Removing them would give players no choice but to look at other maps to play.

It’s very unlikely that either map will take a significant leave of absence any time soon. The Shipment and Nuketown 24/7 playlists are still extremely popular whenever they’re active, suggesting that a large portion of the player base still enjoys playing them. Even the worst versions of Nuketown and Shipment still draw in big player counts, as they offer a rapid style of gameplay that is fast even when compared to regular Call of Duty matches. In practical terms, this makes both maps perfect for camo grinding, which means players who want to unlock their weapon camos quickly will just play them on repeat until they have them. This was raised as an issue in the thread, with some suggestion that Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games, and Treyarch could help solve the problem by removing the 24/7 playlists.

As Treyarch and Raven Software continue to release new content for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, it’s starting to reach the point of the year where many fans are looking towards the next release in the annual FPS franchise. Activision has yet to reveal the next game in the series, although rumors from last year suggest that it will be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, set in Korea. Nothing is confirmed at this point, and all rumors should always be taken with a grain of salt. However, if it does end up being Modern Warfare 4, it will be interesting to see if Shipment makes a return for a fourth consecutive Modern Warfare title.
